I haven't lived in Mercer County for years but Trenton gets my vote, simply because it's a whole lot of ugly in a pretty small area. More than 10,000 people per square mile in a dot of a city, primarily low income, drugs, prostitution, apathetic police and your choice of gangs. It's somewhat unique because it's a wart on an otherwise nice area. Newark, Paterson, Passaic, they're all up by NYC and some overflow can be expected. Trenton stands alone.
I remember reading how they had built a Marriott Hotel there in an attempt to help make it a "destination" and not long after it was completed someone took a 2x4 to the head right outside.
Camden is another area that has been a pit for years now. I'd throw in Atlantic City as well, at least when I was still in NJ. I remember driving down there for a show and we took a wrong turn. We drove through an area where we were basically waiting for someone to carjack us.

No, the worst in North Jersey is Union City, West New York, North Bergen, Guttenburg, and parts of Jersey City (not the whole city, as some parts of JC are very nice).
the worst in all of New Jersey are probably the areas in South Jersey. Trenton has bad parts, but Camden is way worse. Camden is disgusting compared to places that people think are bad up here, like Newark. No offense to South Jerseyans.
Newark isn't even all bad. Some of the projects on the southside of town are hideous, and maybe parts on the eastside. I think the Ironbound gets a bad rap, it's not the nicest of places, but still, it's not the worst.
East Orange and Irvington get bad raps too. They have some gritty parts, they jsut have very large African-American populations which is why other people consider them to be ghettos.

I totally understand your perspective because my brother lives in Irvine (off Jamboree exit), Orange County, CA. It is a beautiful place because it went major development less than 15yrs ago. Many companies and businesses were established nearby and the job opportunities created a massive suburban sprawling mushroom of new highways infrastructures, upscale and affordable (at the time) housing developments, parks, malls, etc.
Having lived in NY before, I find NJ wonderful ..... I am sure you will grow into it.

How do you consider Union City, West New York, North Bergen, and Guttenburg to be the worst in North Jersey? All those places have crime below national average. Then you say Irvington gets a bad rap when it comes second to Camden in crime. Places you didnt mention like Orange, Paterson, Passaic and Plainfield are worst then the Northern Hudson County cities you named.
Here are the stats for Union City and West New York notice the crime levels are below national average. North Bergen and Guttenberg have even less crime then these two cities.

Here is Irvington tell me if you honestly think it is getting a bad rap after you look at this.

A lot of older peolple that I come across are from the south. I don't say wht's up to people cause I don't know them. Saying hello is much better in passing or goodmorning. Whtever time of the day it is, it could be cause I'm older so wht's up not in my vocab.... So please don't try to attack me, ure opinion is ure's and mine is mine. Thank you peace

For the young lady who's from CA, hey it is a big difference to move from cross country like that. But u need to give it a chance, Edison is the Surburbs not the ghetto. So ure living in a good town where the police are out 24/7 not really letting crime go on you feel me. Now me I'm from Newark born and raised, but im not hood, mean or ghetto. I'm only that when i have to be that comes out, but I'm nice other then that. People look at me crazy when I say goodmorning or hello in passing cause their not use to that. Only the olderly people respond cause 9 tmes out of ten their from the south, so thats normal to them. Now i live in North Newark, which is a lot of Spanish. This is way out of my element, but my Fiance moved us here I like the place but not the neighborhood much. As far as the Indi's thats just their culture as far as the funkyness goes, it's nothing new to Jerzey folks... But good luck to u, wish u the best. Peace!

Jimmy Lane, where are you coming from??? Other than Jersey City, Paterson, Passaic, and maybe Union city, all the towns you mentioned are well below the state crime average. I think maybe you need to move to Canada or something. Get in your ride and visit some real scary "hoods". Newark, Camden, Irvington, Orange, Plainfield, Millville, Inner Vineland, Bridgeton, Asbury PK, Atlantic City, JC, Paterson, Passaic, WNY, New Brunswick, East Orange, Union City, Lakewood, Neptune and so on and so forth>

Jose is right. despite Harrison's close proximity to some bad areas, it is actually a pretty safe town. Very cool town, I always take the Path train into the city from Harrison, that's how safe it is. I leave my car there all day.

If so, WOW- I never thought about Harrison being on the list.....I grew up in Harrsion about 10 yrs ago. and had my high school reunion there and I never would of thought the town had changed.
But I guessed with time and people moving from Newark to Harrison, things were going to change for the worse.

Don't listen to this clown, Harrison is still the same ol' nice little town you knew back then. Trust me, I'm in law enforcement in Hudson County and Harrison, East Newark, Secaucus Weehawken and Kearny are the only decent towns in HC.
