I want to live by the nyc area but in a rural area in maybe pa or ny upstate. Can anyone recommend some towns? I like horses and trucks but want to be within an hour or so of nyc for the job market. Thanks for your help.

I'm not sure that many people in the New Jersey forum can help you with where to live in Pennsylvania and New York.

That being said, I'm not sure there are many places in New Jersey that are an hour from New York City where there are horses.

How about a town in Orange County, NY? Lots of rural/semi-rural areas, and in many cases you'll be within an hour of NYC. It's a lot cheaper there than in areas closer to NYC too.

Define your idea of rural. Liking horses and trucks is just one part of the equation. Here are some questions that will help provide more focus:

1) Do you want acreage around your house?

2) How close do you want your neighbors to be?

3) How far are you willing to travel for services like hospitals, grocery stores, banks, etc.?

4) You state you want to be "within an hour or so of NYC." What is the outside travel time you are willing to have to NYC? Keep in mind that I consider travel time to be door-to-door, not just getting to the city limits.

5) Since you are specifically referencing PA and upstate NY, what interest do you have in NJ?

i live in montgomery township in nj. there are farms in the area and lots of full-size pickup trucks. it's possible to make it into nyc in under 90 minutes.

also check out towns to the west, like chester and mendham, nj.

Montgomery Twp., NJ 08558

You may also want to check out these towns:

Hillsborough, NJ 08844
Branchburg, NJ 08853 or 08876

Generally, you can also find acreage in the following counties:

Warren, Hunterdon, Sussex (though it is more remote than most), and parts of western Somerset.

Most of the areas west of I-287 and along I-78 will have the acreage you are looking for and will still give you an interstate to get into the City. BUT, I-78 can get jammed during rush hour so do take that into consideration.
