Looking to rent in either of these areas. Would one be considered more desirable or safer than the other?

Its just me and my dog (no kids), but I come home late most nights, like to go running and walk my dog.

Would like to get some input from anyone that is familiar with both.

Most parts of Bayonne are safer than most parts of the Heights. Bayonne is also more open, so your dog should appreciate that. The issue is that you said you will be coming home late, so the question is will you be driving or using public transportation? Because if it is public transport. then it can be a problem depending on where you are coming from. The Heights are generally more accessible late than Bayonne.

How late?

I would say that Bayonne is safer, but you would need to take either the Light Rail or a bus back into town at night.

The Light Rail stops running at 2 a.m., I believe, and it's not easily accessable by foot from all parts of Bayonne. You would want to rent a place on or near Avenue E if you were walking. If you want to use a car, a few of the light rail stops have parking lots so you could drive there and pay to put your car in the lot. Unless you want to take a folding scooter or bicycle with you, which I've seen a lot of commuters do.

I'm not sure what the bus options into Bayonne are anymore. I think they shut down the 99 bus but I heard NJ Transit would pick it up.

Bayonne while not perfect is safer than the heights. The heights often times has reported gun fire , you don't hear much of that if any in Bayonne.

Depending on your budget, the section of the heights I think you would enjoy is closer to Congress and Palisade. The area around Bowers, South, Palisade, seems to be improving. The price of a cab ride from the nearby train stations are not bad.

Default Bayonne

Four light rail stops and ample bus stops. I moved there from downtown JC and am paying quite a bit less.

What buses run from Bayonne to downtown Jersey City?

There were a couple rentals I was sent but they are WAY south in Bayonne. I'm talking like an hour commute just into downtown JC as opposed to a 15 minute commute from The Heights.
