My husband and I have started looking at homes. We plan to buy with the ultimate goal of closing around may 2012. We have a real estate broker we are using, but if we wanted to go out and see houses one day and make the appointments without her could we? We live in NYC and are renting a car for a weekend and she is going out with us on Saturday but we want to see houses on Sunday. We don't want to have her take both days of her weekend because it's still very early in our process and we likely couldn't a make an offer for another 2-3 months..but my husband and I are excited and we have the car rental so we wanted to go out Again..if we liked the house and it was still available in a few months, we would definitely go through her (we aren't real Estate experts)....thoughts?

If you try to make appointments without your agent, you will run into listing agents who either think you are unrepresented and will want to exclude your agent from receiving the buyer agent commission, or will not want to make the appointment at all without your agent. As long as you make her aware of your time frame, your agent can decide whether to spend another day with you.

Thanks and how does it work with open houses? Can we show up to those without an agent?

Agree 110%

My agent at the time cut me and my ex a deal...we got a kickback..we got some of her comission so it would be foolish not to go without her!

Absolutely. That's the purpose of the open house. When yo are asked to register, I recommend you provide your name and your agents name & contact info. That will let the agent sitting the open house know that you have an agent, so they shouldn't bother trying to sell you their services as a buyer agent.

Yes you can go looking. Ask your agent for some cards. This way when you go see open houses, you can tell them you're working with someone and give them your agent's card.
