I have some friends taking the train from Boston over the Thanksgiving holiday. Question: which train station is more convenient / safer to pick them up at? Newark Penn or the one at the airport? I'm coming down from N. Bergen. They'd be arriving around 10-11 pm.

I don't mind the tolls or the difference in distance, I'm just looking for opinions on convenience and safety.

Thanks ya'all!!! (just moved here from Atlanta, lol)

~Jennifer

1. Tell them to go to Newark Penn Station
2. @ Newark Penn Station direct them to the PATH which is visible from all the Platforms
3. Take the PATH (2$) to Exchange Place
4. @ Exchange Place switch to the Light Rail (2.20$) and take that to North Bergen
5. It takes about 50mins to do this and is safe and stress free... People at Newark Penn station will help you if you need it and the Transfer at Exchange place is very simple....

It would be a pain to do all that with luggage and all.

Easiest to drive would be Secaucus Junction, with them changing trains (to NJ Transit) at NY Penn Station. Without changing, you might as well do Newark Penn; it's not fun driving to the airport either.

No, no, no.

I get where the OP is coming from here. You have guests from out of town who aren't going to (1) know how, or (2) going to look forward to figuring out how to use 3 transit systems they aren't familiar with to get to North Bergen, or switch to NJT to get to Secaucus. The OP is doing them a favor by picking them up at the most convenient place for them, while making sure that option is doable for her too. After all, they've already gone through the trouble of schlepping down to NJ on Amtrak.

I don't think the Airport station has a pick-up/drop-off area. It's designed for people to connect to the airport terminals and fly away. You'd be best served picking them up at Newark Penn Station. There is a small pick-up/drop-off area and taxi stand where you can wait with your car for a short time and load your friends and their luggage. Here are directions from North Bergen to that spot: http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=no...sz=17&t=h&z=13

If you want to leave your car and wait for them inside the station, there are a number of valet-style parking lots around the station.

Keep in mind that you will be in Newark, at night, presumably alone, while you wait. It's not the safest place to be, so while you wait, keep an eye on what's going on around you.

You act like Newark Penn station is dangerous at night , talk about sheltered...there are a ton of cops there since Amtrak , NJT and PA have there NJ divisions there... There are also alot of staff there to help people and whats wrong with Amtrak? Its a very nice way to travel , the New England section is new and rarely breaks down... The Signage is very clear to get from Newark Penn station to Exchange Place to North Bergen....

For someone (like the OP) who is new to the area and may not know, I simply advised that she should be aware that Newark (yes, even around Penn Station) is a place where you should probably pay more attention to what's going on around you than a lot of other places. That's all. The "ton of cops there" aren't just there for the Dunkin Donuts, y'know

And maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't want to send my friends on an odyssey via PATH and HBLR (which, after 11PM, could take an hour or more), after they've already spent 4 hours and some coin on Amtrak, to save myself 15 minutes of driving. In the end I think it's just easier to go get them in Newark. In the OP's shoes, that's what I would do, anyway.

The Cops are there because Newark Penn station like NYPenn is one of the busiest stations in the country and needs security....there also based in the station next the Amtrak office.

Thanks for the responses. As lammius referenced, I am doing them a favor by picking them up. It's easier for me to pick them up rather than have them try to navigate public transportation at 10 pm after being on a train for 4+ hours. I was simply asking which station was easier for ME to pick them up at.

I won't be alone, I'll have my husband with me, so I'm not as worried about security, etc.

Thanks again for the responses!!! I'm almost tempted to have them come into NY Penn and kick around the city for a while!

that's actually a better option if you don't mind the tolls. at 11pm you won't have much problem with parking on the street or just driving around until your guests come out.
