I get a monthly bill. Its about $63/month.
If you take your total bill, then divide it by the "thousand gallons used" you get a cost per 1,000 gallons. This is really the only way to compair.
My cost, from NJ American is about $8 per thousand gallons.

try 2k for a 30 day cycle in cranford NJ. American Water Company! and they said the meter tested fine! 2 people, one bathroom, one kitchen sink and one washing machine! How does that even make sense!! I can't get an answer from anyone other than an offer to reduce the bill for that specific month. 19 other months show consistency with the same usage, but one month spiked to the moon and no one from the water company or the board or public works seems to want to try and get to the bottom of it-but rather have me pay 2k and hope it goes away. Anyone else have an issue like this?

did you start a bottled water business?

my water bill averaged around $67 a month. im in holmdel and american water now is my provider, used to be shoreland.

i recently moved and my base rate is higher because i guess i have a larger water pipe to my house. i used to pay around $36 a month.

For American water it's the fact that they're rounding. So let's say for most months you use 1.1K. So you add it up like this:
1K charge, meter reads 1.1K use
1K charge, 2.2 meter
1K charge, 3.3 meter
1K charge, 4.4 meter
1K charge, 5.5 meter
1K charge, 6.6 meter
1K charge, 7.7 meter
1K charge, 8.8 meter
1K charge, 9.9 meter
2K charge, 11 meter

See that last one? Where it went from 9.9 to 11 and you get charged for 2K? Did you send in extra money when you were using that extra .1 every month? Of course not, but the small overages add up over time.

Take the offer to reduce the bill that month, but it's more than likely that you used that much. Their charging metrics just aren't that precise when it comes to smaller homes. We average about 2, sometimes it drops down to 1, sometimes it pops up to 3. If you want, go outside and write down your own meter readings and bring facts to them.

I came home in October after being away for a week and my toilet was running and running. I got it fixed, and when the water bill came in it was $100 higher than normal. I just paid it. Knew there wasn't much I could do.

$2K is insane, though. I would definitely keep pursuing that. I take it the bill went back to a regular level the following month?

I don't think you get that the 2k is not the meter reading, but that the bill is two thousand dollars. That's how I'm reading it, anyway. Maybe the poster can clarify.
