I don't know anything about NJ, can anyone out there recommend decent towns/areas in North Jersey. I am in search of a family oriented neighborhood, high quality school disctrict (I have a 4 year old), close to transportation (I work in the World Financial District area). I am looking for a 2 bedroom, and my range is in the $1200 area. Thanks.
$1200 for a 2 bedroom isn't going to get you very far in a town that most would qualify as having a "good" school system. For $1800/month you could probably get into Rutherford.

you saw what irene and the october storm did to north jersey???? those storms utterly buttraped north jersey guess what those storms did to brooklyn NOTHING.
OP, what tdstyles says is correct. That's a low budget for a 2-bedroom apartment the type of neighborhood you are looking for. Everyone wants a safe neighborhood with good schools and a decent commute to the city.
It's not in North Jersey but Highland Park on the Northeast Corridor line would be manageable in your budget and it has a good school system. The train station is a walk over the bridge in New Brunswick. Goes to Penn station though. Another option would be to switch at Newark.

There are two ways to this.
(1): a very, very long commute. Earlier poster was talking about highland park; I don't know the area, but, could do maybe. You might also be able to swing this in Rockland county if you get very lucky, or out in Orange. Far north of the metro north would do the trick too. We're talking 90 minutes to 2 hours each way here, though.
(2): A nontraditional/less than ideal rent situation. Scour Craigslist for families looking to rent out part of their house to make some extra $$, this can be far cheaper than a "real" apartment. This might be harder with a kid (people doing this like to rent to single young professionals when possible), but, would possibly be a way to find all of those without going so far out you're never home.
edit: best approach of course is to raise your rent. $1800 will get you what you want, $1400 and some effort/luck will get most of the way there. Of course, that isn't always possible; if $1200 is what you can afford, it's what you can afford. Heck, it's all I could afford on my present salary as well.

This is a very good option. Plus you would have the benefit of having a cool smaller city for a casual night out. The train ride to newark is about 40mins, depending if you take the express train.

In order to get what you want, like other posters have said you need to raise your budget by a lot or do a very long commute. Towns with good public school district with good access to financial district are expensive, hell even towns with bad public school district but great access to city are expensive (JC, Hoboken).
For 2bed in North NJ with good school within 1 hour commute (not door to door just bus/train/subway ride), you're probably looking at min. 1400-1600 a month in old building and it'll be very limited in inventory. For example, Fort Lee has good school district and you can get a 2bed there for 1400-1600 range but it'll be small and tight. There is no train to city so you'll need to take the bus in and take subway.
Overall, realistically you'll need 1600+ if you want more choices in towns with good school district that's reasonably near city. Property tax in NJ is high and it's reflected on rent because owners need to make at least that much more to cover rent or they wouldn't bother renting out. Whereas NYC is more reflection on supply/demand and fact that home prices are so expensive that owners need to cover mortgage more than tax.

Comparing entire state to one borough probably isn't fair. At the same time, Brooklyn rent prices are just as insane as NJ. North NJ is particularly expensive for most part due to proximity to NYC.
Just like parts of Brooklyn with good proximity to city is hella expensive. DUMBO, downtown brooklyn, brooklyn heights, north williamsburg, etc. are all heavily gentrified or still gentrifying and rent is very pricey and on-par if not higher than North NJ for most part.
Once you hit 1hour commute to NYC (which is about same from Canarsie to city), you can find 2bed for budget you are looking for but in my opinion once you hit 1hour commute to NYC, you're nearing central NJ than north NJ. Once you hit central NJ, rental prices dip for most part as well.
Difference is you can get better public education for your children in NJ than Brooklyn.
