A New Jersey ballot question to allow sports betting at Atlantic City casinos and the state's racetracks passed comfortably Tuesday by a 2-1 ratio. With the question's passage, Republican Gov. Christie is poised to support legislation to make the activity legal in the state, but a federal law must still be overturned.
"With this referendum, we have an opportunity that gives the state more solid footing to challenge the federal ban on sports wagering outside of a few select places," Christie said before he voted in favor of Public Question 1.
Legislation under consideration in Trenton would prohibit wagering on any college team based in the state or on any collegiate game taking place in New Jersey.
Glad to see the results went the way they did. Supposed to bring in $225 million a year to the state.
Christie is pushing this hard, so I imagine he is confident he can get an exemption to the law. Should be fun to bet on football legally in a couple years once this (hopefully) arrives.
People gamble illegally all the time. Whats taken the state so long to get in on the action. Now only if the feds let up we will see some additional revenue at the racetracks and casinos.

Exactly. I was surprised that there were so many votes AGAINST it. People bet on football and other sports all the time through the bookies. They want the criminals to reap all the profits?
College football and basketball were included, though you can't really call them amateur
The law that passed stated "professional, certain college or amateur sport or athletic events"
It seems to be differentiating between college and amateur sport.
Wonder what "amateur sport" NJ will allow betting on?
