Default SSN for renting apartment

I am moving from Bangalore to New Jersey. I tried calling a few apartments to get an idea about rent and other formalities and found that in New Jersey they don't rent out an apartment without SSN.

I got an intracompany transfer and will be on L1 Visa and I don't have SSN currently.

I also found that for applying SSN, I need a address proof which can be rental agreement.

So I can't rent an apartment without SSN and I can't apply for SSN without renting an apartment. Curious to know if anyone has faced similar situation and has a workaround for the same.

If your company is bring you here on a work visa, wouldn't they provide you with a temp housing? You can use that address or your company's office address as your mailing address for receiving your SSN card.

In that case, contact your HR. I am sure they do provide services for people they send outside the country. If that doesn't work, get in touch with anyone from your company who is in US on L1. I am assuming you have an on-site team here in US.
