You only have control over your local area. You have to ask what makes your town attractive to thugs? It surely has to do with affordability and convenience to start.

Once you determine what it is, discuss it over dinner with your mayor. Mayor's are pretty open to these discussions. If you want to get a head start on it, donate $10,000 or so to his campaign.

You can whine, but the current system doesn't consider whining. If you want change, you must play by the rules.

I invite you to West Windsor, NJ.... if you decide not to stay in South Orange. Thugs cannot afford to settle here.

Move to Jersey City waterfront. You can get a nice apartment in a safe area for as little as $4000/month.

Is that all?

Maybe less. I have some units that are $3,600/month. We have had no issues with thugs. We also have doormen so it's safe.

I thought the part about $4k was a joke. Guess not...

PS - One doorman does not make a place safe.

Why would it be a joke? Do you think that "thugs" would move into these condos at that price? BTW, I don't live there, I just play landlord.

They wouldn't but their bosses might.

The bosses are probably rich, and would live accordingly. Not move into Jersey City Condos. They aren't that luxurious.

The same way you don't want them in your town, Newark doesn't want them here. The city of Newark (and other cities like it) can't dictate to people where they move when they move.

If the areas in Newark where thugs live become too expensive for them to stay is it Newark's fault they moved to your town? Is that realistic?

Maplewood/SO has always had it's share of crime. I think now with the market plummeting and too many people buying when the market was high put some homeowners in a bad position. However, thugs moving in? Uh....no
