Default Moving from West New York, NJ to somewhere else in NJ with public transit to NYC

So right now I work in the city, but I am considering a job about 30 minutes west inland in NJ. Not sure if you are familiar with West New York, but it is a black hole for car traffic. West New York is nice for easy public transit to the city, a bus goes by every 30 seconds all day long.

But getting into and out of the town by car is very difficult, streets are extremely narrow and there are not many main roads and the one main road Blvd East is filled with buses. When I went for the job interview, despite reverse commuting, it took me just as long to get out of West New York and onto route 3 as it took me to drive the rest of the way to the job.

So I am looking for other places along the coast of NJ that are within driving distance to Picatinny Arsenal (near Dover, NJ) with better access to highways, but also has easy public transit to the city.

Any ideas? I was looking at Newark, and my wife just flat out said no. But if you love Newark, let me know about it.

Well it depends where in Newark. Considering you 2 are from WNY you should be okay in certain parts. But it's tough to get to there from Dover. Might want to try something off Route 80 or 46. Wayne and Totowa have express bus service to Port Authority.

Also, would you care to tell us more about yourself, background, income, what you expect to pay for rent, etc.

Oh sure, salary would be about $100k, and would be looking at 2-bedrooms probably $1500-$2000.

Hmmm...Parsippany, one of the Caldwells, West or South Orange(from closest to the furthest from your work)...check Trulia or Zillow for rentals.

Newark can get pretty busy with traffic during rush hour.

Try West Orange, or South Orange since there is a train station in South Orange to the city. They are on Route 280.

Parsippany is very close to Dover and still there is a train and bus to NYC in that area. Though it takes a while to get to the city.

LOL , you don't seem to know a thing about this region....

Newark has one of the greatest public Transit systems outside Jersey City and NYC , so traffic isn't an issue. And is ony 15-20mins from NYC.

West Orange doesn't have any Train service , yet ...nor will it soon...

South Orange has 2 stations..neither are near I-280

Parsippany has no Rail service and only one bus line to NYC which takes anywhere from 1-2hrs depending on traffic

Dover is 1.5hrs by Train to Midtown...

No way is Newark 15-20 minutes from NYC.

Here are the transit times from Newark Penn Station to the first point you reach in NYC:

PATH to World Trade Center: 22 minutes
NJT train to Penn Station: 18-26 minutes
#108 bus to PA Bus Terminal: 30-35 minutes

And this is if you're starting out on the platform of Newark Penn Station and are traveling to the platform of the bus/train station in NYC and the bus/train is sitting right there.

Realsitically, you can't expect anything less than a 35-45 minute commute from Newark to NYC. It's better than from places further out west, but it's still not a 15-20 minute commute as you describe.

The place I would highly recommend would be Denville. You have TWO train lines (Montclair/ Boonton and Morris/ Essex) with a 24 hour CVS right across from them. They connect you to Montclair, Morristown, Newark, Hoboken & NYC. The different platforms are essentially right across from one another.

Additionally, I-80, Route 46 go through Denville and I-287 is close.

Newark might be the transportation epicenter of NJ, but Denville is very underrated for that distinction.

Just make sure you get a place on a hill, as Denville has had some close calls with flooding. But those lakes freeze over in the winter, and if you like to skate, it can be like a Norman Rockwell painting.
