Default DC to Newark and West Orange need some advice on where to live...

Hello,

I am starting a job in New Jersey in a couple of months and I am looking for a good, safe place to live. I will be working out of Newark mostly and sometimes West Orange. I have looked in Middlesex County as a possible area, but I am not really familiar with central Jersey. Ideally, I need an area that is low in crime, good schools and still reasonably affordable. A commute that would not kill me would be a plus too. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Jerry

How long of a commute can you deal with because Edison is a nice town and it'd take about 30min to get to Newark by train. The drive isn't too bad but if you're working during common hours like 9am-5pm it'll be much worse.

Thank you for the information. A 30 to 40 min drive is right about where I want to be.

if you are commuting to Newark by train, anywhere is fine. By car from Edison to Newark IS A NIGHTMARE. it will take you ATLEAST an hour to go less than 20 miles on the parkway.

West Orange is decent. Montclair is a fun, young place to live and very commutable to Newark. So is Rutherford, Little Falls, Verona, Milburn. Try to stay away from Middlesex County if you plan to commute by car. I am not kidding, the Parkway is a Parking Lot during rush hour. I commuted from Edison to Newark for a year and on average it was 60 minutes to go 18 miles.
