I think you'll have to raise your commuting budget a bit. $150 won't get you too far (for instance, a Montclair-NY Penn Station ticket is $208 per month, and a Clifton-NY Penn ticket is $193 per month)

Don't forget Nutley. It's a nice small town. Good schools and lots of folks take the bus into Manhatten.

Okay. I should have qualified the question on the amount of time for the commute. Is that door-to-door or time on the road/mass transit?

If we're talking door-to-door, that puts you into North Jersey as opposed to Central Jersey or the Shore. For time on the road, you may have a bit more of a window into Central Jersey.
