DO you know anyone that has one? Do you have one?

I"m not talking about these 500k eco homes, I'm talking about alternative homes like shipping container homes, cob homes, tiny homes, adobe, etc.

I know they have them in other parts of the world and the USA. I'm most interested in Cob homes like they have in England that can be built for under 10k. Cob houses have been around for 5oo years in England.

Default Cob House

I'm not sure about New Jersey, but there is a wonderful cob house in Georgia. Check out http://onlineathens.com/stories/1109...52964740.shtml for more information. I too, am very interested in purchasing land and starting the zoning process to build a cob house, live simply, and debt-free. Fear seems to keep me entrenched in the rat race though. Good luck in your journey.

I'd be shocked to see one, honestly, given the nature of most of us folks that live in this state.

Drove past a McMansion today in CNJ, in the middle of a field, they were moving in a chandelier bigger than one of my bedrooms...

you might be able to do this in places in north west nj or west, somewhere where land is cheaper. Building code and minimum home sizes could be an issue in NJ. however even if the home size is 800sq ft or something, i don't see anything from stopping you. you are not going to legally build a 100 sq ft home but you probably could do something for a lot less than a traditional home.

I do not think you could get away with building a cob home in NJ or much of northern US. There's very little snow in the UK, but there is quite a bit in the northeast US. In the UK, cob homes have a very large overhang to prevent the water leaching away the walls of a cob house; but even with a large overhang, the snow accumulation and subsequent melting would "melt" a cob house in no time beginning at the bottom.
