Hello All,

I'm a NJ resident who visited D.C. over the Holidays. Got a nasty fine in the mail $150 for speeding 51mph in a 35mph zone.

what happens if i don't pay, given I'm not from DC?

I drove through the EZ Pass toll at Turnpike exit 7A before Christmas without paying (not paying attention) and still haven't gotten a ticket in the mail.

You'll only get second hand info on this around here, BUT if that happened to me the first thing I would find out is IF it is a real ticket or just a finacial bill. Big diff's between the two. Many towns might set up automated devices but they send you a bill which they expect you to pay them. Difference is there is no legal violation and no points and no record on your license or insurance. If it is an actual traffic ticcket then they have to be prepared to testify against you and prove you where the person driving, etc in order for the thing to be valid or legal.

I'm guessing they just took a photo of your car and are sending you a bill.

I would venture to say it might still be too early to expect a notice in the mail from EZPass. What others have done if driving a car without ezpass and going through is to register the plates online to a valid account, then when you get the notice all you do is pay the toll itself and they waive any $25 or $50 fees.

You were right. I got my ticket in the mail yesterday. The due date is February 15, which doesn't give me much time to respond. I don't use EZPass enough to justify registering my vehicle. So I'll suck it in and pay the penalty but will request a one time penalty fee waiver.

Other thing you could do might be to ask a good friend or relative to put your car & lic plate on their account, then you can refer to that account and have the fee waived, just pay the toll instead.
