Coming to LI either Spring or late fall in 2012. Don't want to stay on LI or in NYC. need recommendations for a nice friendly hotel/motel, flights to which city and commute directions for getting to LI by train. Don't want to drive on east coast.Too many bridges and highways. Pretty confusing. Thanks for your help.

Where on LI are they? LI is 120 miles long and can take 3 hours to get from one end to the other.

There's only one good way to get to LI from NJ and that's driving when there is no traffic, which means odd hours. I highly recommend you stay on LI. The South Shore is home to some spectacular beaches.

Yes - I'm starting to get the feeling - it's going to best to fly into JFK and take the LIRR to Jericho LI. They are in East Meadow. I like being near a Whole Foods market in Jericho, being vegetarian.

60% of Long Island towns have access to the Long Island Railroad , now staying in NJ might not be a good idea. But if you do stay in NJ you'll want to stay in Jersey City or Weehawken somewhere near the Transit network so getting to the LIRR isn't a pain. If you need to use the Port Washington line , then go to Penn station. For the rest of the lines you can use Penn station or Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn.
