The schools are good....not the best in the state, but far from the worse, and better than average.
Taxes...well they are pretty good, considering we are in NJ, where we "enjoy" the highest taxes in the nation.
Traffic: the secondary roads through the township are pretty good, no major hassles, 287 does tend to bunch up in Bridgewater during rush hour, as well as around the Mall during holiday time. 202/206 intersection with 22 is always congested, but nothing too bad, unless there are accidents. 22 is a nightmare during rush, thankfully there are ways to avoid that road for most. On the plus side, Bridgewater has excellent Highway access to get anywhere you need to.
NYC Commute - in a word, it is a nightmare. As ansky mentioned the train is about 90 minutes of train time to either Penn Station or WTC - however when you factor in the time switching trains in Newark, plus the time to get to to station from your home, your actual commute time door to door is more like 2 hours each way - or more if your home is far from the station, or your office is more than a couple of blocks from the Path Station. Adding 4 hours to an 8 hour work day, plus 7 hours of sleep a night means you get to enjoy your home and family very little during the week. A friend who does this commute, gets home at night just in time to say hello to his elementary aged kids at bedtime - providing there are no train delays.

Thank you for all of your responses. Looks like Bridgewater is a great place -- just doesn't seem practical if I need to commute to NYC on a daily basis. On to the next town!

If you can provide us with some more info on your particular situation (see the sticky post here Questions For Future and Potential Residents ) we can give you some great suggestions of other towns to look at.

Where are you coming from? Originally NY; currently renting in South Amboy
Why are you moving? Looking for a house, not an apartment - not in love with South Amboy.
Where will you be working ? I work in Midtown (have the option of working in the downtown office as well) and my wife works in North Brunswick (off of Rte 130, by Milltown)
Will you buy or rent? Buy
What is your budget? Around 300K (going through pre-approval process in a few weeks, so this may change a little)
What kind of place are you looking for? House (not a condo/townhouse)
Will anyone (spouse, children, pets) be moving with you ? Wife - looking to have children in near future
Do you need/want good public schools? Yes
Briefly describe the kind of neighborhood you'd like to live in
families with young children, safe, close-knit, block parties, parks, etc.
List three things that are important to you in order of importance.
safety, family oriented, easy parking

I'm confused. If I ever dare post a listing, even if it's not one of my own or an attempt to sell, but just as an example or in answer to a question, it gets edited out almost immediately, and I get a warning that I'm not allowed to post even a link to any specific property or list of properties. Has this rule changed recently?

Full disclosure: I AM NOT A REALTOR, I HAVE NO ASSOCIATION with ANY brokerage, or broker. I have no relationship with the owner of the house.
I have seen people post specific listings of houses folks are considering buying on here before. I didnt think it was against the TOS. I simply ran a realtor.com seach in 08902 for 310k. If its against TOS, mods can take it down I guess.
