Jersey City question
Now, I know there's some JC haters on here , so I'm directing this question to people who actually live in JC. How bad is Greenville? Seriously. Is it a "hearing bullets in the night" kind of place or a "sorta rough looking, not filled with rich white people" kinda place?

I live on the border between McGinley Square/Greenville area - I say it depends on where you're looking. Much of it is pretty bad - but some of it is OK. I go into the area a lot and I've never had a problem, even in bad areas.
McGinley square area is really coming up ... new condos just went in, decent shops, we see NYC hipsters all the time now ...

Hi there Abejita,
I have lived here all my life and I must say it has changed for the worse. The Greenville section has plent of crime, and I haven't seen a rich white person for awhile hahaha...... I currently live in this section, I must say the town is trying to come up and build condos and shops, but who can afford them. The crime rate with gun violence alone has gotten way out of control, me and my family are relocating this year to the South. This is no place to raise a family.......

I was born and raised in Jersey City. You wont find any rich white guys walking through Greenville but the same is true of Hoboken or Downtown Jersey City 10yrs ago. Greenville is developing although not ast fast as some other parts of the city. You will be ok as long as you respect the people of the area they will respect you in return.

I was Born and raised in J.C. true I do not live there now..but know enough
about the area and still have family there to make a comment....don't go to
Greenville...true it may be up and coming (again) but it will take time and you
don't want to be coming home alone at night here...trust me...it's a shame.
there were some big old beautiful houses here...West Side Ave. had some
nice shopping years ago...my parents are buried in Holy Name Cemetary and
I was advised not to bother going there either..people were getting robbed
in the cemetary...Mayors come and go and Governers do too and seems to
me, nothing changes...crime gets worse....I grew up in the Heights and I
don't recognize it any more....it's disgusting.

I still say it really depends on where you are looking and what you are looking for. It also depends on the kind of person you are. Frankly if you just want to live with rich white people go to Wayne or Alpine or some such hideous place.
But I'm assuming that you mention Greenville because you're not loaded with cash. If you are, just forget it and move to Paulus Hook or Newport if you want JC. Are you buying? Or just renting? Do you have a family? I don't think I'd buy in most parts of Greenville, but I'd rent in others.
I can tell you that our home has practically doubled in value in two years. Yes, the schools stink, and the taxes suck, yes I have found drug paraphenalia on my sidewalk, I've shooed a bum from my porch, and yes I have heard gunshots, but JC is also vital, vibrant and electric.
I love the fact that I can hear about a dozen languages on my walk to the fruit stand. I like being a part of revitalizing the community, meeting kooky characters out of a Elmore Leonard novel every day. One night after eating my take-out Ethiopian food I heard a guy practicing jazz riffs on his trumpet somewhere in the apartment building on my block. Can't find that in the burbs, baby.
Every city's got warts and either it works for you or it doesn't...
*gets off soap box*
