Default re: lousy apartment neighbors

Walking to put your robe away in the bedroom closet and you get a bang on the floor from below. This is a genuine experience of mine with apartment living. It sucks!! No parties, no visitors, we work all day, hardly ever home, skinny not heavy people, but our neighbors don't want us to "WALK" in our own apartment. We know the floors are creaky, but tough luck, thats apartment living for ya. I joke that I'm going to install one of those cables with the handle bars to hang onto and glide around the place without my feet hitting the floor. Anybody have similiar experiences? I mean people nowadays? We are so, different than the person sitting nex to us, it's crazy. So people have no common sense or consideration for others.

I might be sympathetic with your neighbors. People walking above you on a thin wood floor can be very noisy. My advice would be to cover most of the floor with an area carpet (probably required in the lease anyway) and some padding (cheap at Home Depot). Then walk around in your socks- keeps the place cleaner anyway.

If you do both of those things, then you can honestly say you have gone the extra mile. A lot of buildings have thin floors and even normal activities have an impact on others. Good luck.

The person below should look for a place on the top floor so that they don't have to have people walking on top of them. I grew up in a 2 family on the bottom floor, thankfully there was carpet upstairs. I agree that you should get area rugs if you don't already have them, it will help some.

Shoes have come off at the front door since day one. Entire place is carpeted except bathroom/kitchen. I don't believe area carpets will fix the creaky floorboards underneath the carpet. They're unavoidable, already tried avoiding the creaky spots and I'm a light walker. Maybe I should call maintenance to rip up the carpet and fix the floorboards. Maybe that would appease them.

Years ago when I had an apartment, there was a neighbor below me who would have a fit if he even heard a footstep. He was a little odd too and appeared to be on some type of medication. One day he went ballistic, so I called the police. After that it stopped and we moved to a better neighborhood anyway.

I'm laughing so hard...not at you...sorry ..I remember my Dad used to take the broom handle and tap rather hard and rapidly on the ceiling to our upstairs neighbors...but only when it was like 11 PM and their stereo was blasting.

Complain to management about the neighbor below if this is the case. They also need to speak to them. If the floors are making a lot of noise, maybe it's time for new carpet?

Late at night and really early in the morning, especially if they are heavy walkers. If they do walk heavy, they should be on a bottom floor.

Most people dont think of these things though because they have no clue what apartment living is like until they do it.
