The problem is that the NJ Turnpike cuts through the very worst smelling part of our state (Elizabeth, Linden, area) and out-of-staters get a taste they won't forget. But then they generalize all of NJ as 'smelly'. People rag on my hometown of Newark all the time, but I guess you could say I'm used to it. I'll admit, there's much less bad things to say about JC because the city now versus just 2 decades ago are night and day.

hate NJ
I"m orginally from NJ. I hate it, I hate to visit, I hate to see, and the People are from 1900.
First NJ, for the most part, as the not gown in terms of husing. There is the same old late 40' early50's houses standing with no attempt to update. I live in Arlington Virginia and everyone is updateing their, renovation their house, care in their school. Most public schools will top private schools. The smell fro Phil to Neward is disgusting there are not enough young people in NU and the reason it is not envigorated. Every large town (newark, eliz, trenton, etc. are nothing both slums. I could go on and on but if you like NJ, that is great for you. John

I mean what is up with this....sure we aren't perfect but I like it here and sometimes have to let my response "sit" for a few minutes before I hit the submit button...good thing I do or I'd be in hot water for sure with the mods as I just want to BLAST these nay sayers and defend my state

All states have their good and bad areas. Personally, I like Jersey. I go there on vacation every year (Ocean City or Wildwood Crest). The beaches in Jersey are as good as anywhere in the US, in my opinion, and the atmosphere is great...the shore towns and boardwalks are like going back to a simpler time....not overrun with crappy chain restaurants and big-box stores like Myrtle Beach, Maryland, Florida, etc.
Sure Jersey has crime ridden ghettos like Camden, Newark, Trenton, Paterson, Jersey City. And PA has Philly, Reading, Harrisburg, Allentown. And Michigan has Flint, Detroit, etc, Indiana has Gary, California has Compton and Oakland. etc etc etc. Every state has bad areas. Personally, I think Jersey's good areas outweigh the bad. I'd live near the South Jersey shore if it wasn't so darn expensive in NJ compared to PA.

Are you kidding? I wish this state would KEEP those houses from the '40s 50s' and stop with the huge suburban sprawl featuring 'modern' architecture where every other house looks the same.
You're from VA, so our Newark is your Richmond (well, rankings-wise Richmond is much worse)
As far as no young people in NJ:...huh?

I agree. That's another thing I like in the older towns in PA, and pretty much the entire northeast...the architecture. I'll take the older homes anyday over the sprawling, no-character subdivisions where most of the houses look the same, no trees, etc.

The negative reputation Jersey has doesn't really bother me, probably because I'm not a native (if I were, I'm sure it would). But I grew up in an area in a very similar situation - Orange County, CA, which I think is one of the most misunderstood or misrepresented places in the country. In both cases, adjacent media hubs (New York/L.A.) are the ones crafting the images, and the people doing the crafting have no interest in living in, understanding, or getting to know the people of the areas they're caricaturing (is that a word?). At the least, Jersey has a lot more famous native sons/daughters to speak well of the place.
As a non-native, my perspective is that I don't care how bad NJ's reputation is - I know I'm very happy here and I plan on staying here, and if others don't feel the same way, maybe that'll leave more of the state for the rest of us.

I agree a million percent. I LOVE NJ for the old established neighborhoods and lack of subdivisions.
