I think it is sad that there is such a focus on anti-bullying these days in general. Bullying is a fact of life - always has been always will be - everyone in the animal kingdom has to deal with it and be the better for it. There will be bullying after high school and college remember - it can exist in the workplace in some shape or form - and it can be subtle. It often occurs withing the home as well. Jumping off a bridge is not a solution to any of this nor is crying to mommy. Everyday on the roads of NJ, there are bullies, taligating others in their huge SUVs. These drivers are bullies, but they think they are justified and will never admit it, like every other type of bully. Where do we draw the line? Are some bullying cases against certain groups and in certain instances more important than others?

Are you Indian?
If you were also a college student and it was your room also I would say that you should be convicted of invasion of privacy just like this guy. There would be no bias intimidation or hate crime of course ....

If you are some middle aged/old guy, as you sound, that would warrant more serious charges if you were to get into a dorm and start filming.

This did get the media coverage because Clementi was gay. Remember the trial was not about his suicide, but privacy and a hate crime.

BTW...Clementi did his own bashing against Ravi.
Just watched the 20/20 show on this. And I must say, the tenor of the whole interview was in Clementi's favor. But I found it odd how they came up with ONE negative post made by Clementi, yet talked about how Ravi deleted HUNDREDS of posts and messages, in order to wipe out/cover up (depending on your pov) what he'd done.

I think what he did was reprehensible. You claim it was only because he was gay that the media covered it. You're right. But it was also only because he was gay, that Ravi did what he did. Had it been a M/F situation, he'd have ignored it.

I found it hilarious that Ravi claimed that the charge was b.s., and he shouldn't have to show remorse, because no one could know what was in his mind. And therefore can't know he had a bias. But apparently he felt the need to let everyone know constantly what was on his mind by tweeting/messaging it.

Which all made the verdict seems pretty valid to me. What his punishment should be is another matter.

There is a difference between something being morally/ethically wrong and a crime. Do I think there was invasion of privacy? Yes. Was he wrong to do it? Of course but the penalty he will pay is a bit steep for what happened here.

There are many crimes have obvious hate involved in them, why is one type of hate different than another? Why is it worse when someone kills a gay person (not saying this happened here at all) because they're a homophobe vs an ex-husband killing his ex-wife? Hate is involved in both but why is one worse than the other? Someone is dead by the hands of another and both should be treated equally IMO.

Hate by itself is never any crime. It is a feeling we are all blessed with which helps us make judgements for our own survival, as in I'd hate to drive off the road and crash a car, etc. There is no such thing properly as a hate crime.

It's not okay. Clemente was a racist bigot. Ravi is guilty of invasion of privacy and potential bullying via social media.
