Hey guys i'm new to this forum, and i need some help!!! I plan on moving next may to either new jersey or staten island & I need to be close to new york city (30 to 45 min tops commute) I would like either a 1 bedroom or a studio between 600 & 900 I dont know the neighborhoods at all but i found some studios for 650 in east orange n.j and a 1 bedroom for 750 in s.i. section todt hill. i heard newark was bad but how bad is it? Dont raise a family bad or crime spree bad? I'm single & have a dog that is a service dog (a pitbull) however he is not a service dog for me he goes to hospitals and schools to see kids and the elderly he is certified and out here in cali i've had no problem renting with him at all!! Dont know how it is on the east though. I definently want a safe neighborhood i can walk in at night by myself or with him where i wont be harassed. This really doesnt make a difference to me, but alot of people tell me staten island is where I should go cuz i'm italian is that really a big deal out there cuz i was really considering new jersey!!!! Please any help at all would be appreciated!!

Todt Hill is very nice but that commute would be horrible. If you want Italian, look at Nutley, Bayonne, or even Secaucus for that price range.

Being 100% Italian, I can tell you the sense of community is fairly nice especially in Nutley and Bayonne. Be prepared to pack on 20 pounds though.

My old landlord in Belleville insisted I join him and his family upstairs for Sunday dinner every single week and honestly, I never ate that much in my life.

Funny stuff, guys! I was on a trip to Naples with a friend from Morris County, and were driving into the city from the south on a tour bus full of Californians, and they were ooo-ing and ah-ing at the quaint but slightly funky Neapolitan suburbs ("oh look at all the little gardens!")...and my friend say "it looks just like..." and I said "Bayonne, except for the laundry hanging from the balconies" and she said "I was going to say Staten Island!" So of course we loved La Bella Napoli, because it felt so familiar in a strange way. As if -- here is the original of what we grew up with. I live in Lawrenceville, which is a solidly Italian town, and it is safe, affordable, and the local mechanic, Carlo, has a sign that says Italian Spoken.

I'd always look for an Italian neighborhood!

A $750 one bedroom...I'd take it if it's decent.

I would definitely check out Rutherford and Nutley.

Rutherford has a train line, a cute downtown and Nutley is a lovely town as well. I am not really partial to Lyndhurst because of the lack of trees, but it is very Italian. I would stay away from E Orange and Newark--i don't think they are safe. I would not live there as a single woman.

Default Good place for a single person

Please check out this link on the Jersey Forum.

4 kids were just shot execution style for no reason in a playground lat month. It is a truly unsafe place-not marginally unsafe, but very unsafe. They are trying to make it better but there just aren't enough police. You would probably not feel comfortable leaving your apartment at night. It is not worth the cheaper rent in my opinion.

Chances are that you would be ok but in my opinion it is not worth the risk of being hit by a stray bullet or being the victim of a hold up.

Nutley is fine, I highly recommend it, maybe you could get a roommate if you want to keep costs down.

Rutherford or Lyndhurst are 2 towns you might find a place as both have multi family homes that may allow a dog. Both are also within easy access of NYC. Roommate is a great idea too. I wouldn't live in Newark for free.
