Done all of that, except I've pumped my own gas in NY

Why does it matter that he was born legal resident of NJ? lol

I'm out. But the DMV here is downright pleasant!

MVC is a joy compared to what it used to be. Since the overhaul, I've never spent more than 10 minutes there per visit (and that includes going to Trenton).

Hurray! Thats me...
I was born in NJ and lived there until I was about 30. After that we lived in PA and now SC.
I did all those things, but the taylor ham. But, perhaps it counts as our daughter loves a taylor ham sandwich.
(Oh yes the Ledgewood Circle!)

If we want to get technical, the use of the word "native" by definition means being born in a certain place. So, the only way you can be a "native of NJ" would have been to be born in NJ. Think Kyle in the South Park "Jersey" episode. He was a "native" of NJ and it was in his DNA, but he had never lived there.
That takes us to the other term that was used, being "from" NJ. I think anyone who was raised here or spent the majority of their life here can be considered to be "from" NJ. Anything else is pretty much just living here for a period of time and does not confer any title, though you could snag the "NJ" badge on FourSqaure, lol.
So, in the case of the OP, by definition you are not a native, but you are definitely from NJ, moreso than even some natives are.
As for me, I am a native and I am from NJ. I was born here and I've spent 26 of my 31 years living here, with only one of them not as an official resident. Four years were spent in Boston for college and one year in Texas for work. During that time I was always identified as being "from NJ".

Well I guess if you go by the strict definition, though think of it this way...who is more connected with NJ? a person who is born and moves out to California at age 1 or a person who moves to NJ at age one and spends his childhood/adolescence in the state...

Obviously the person who moved to NJ at age 1 and spent their life living here. I was really just making a semantical argument over the definitions.
The person who was born here is a "native", but they are not "from" here.
The person who wasn't born here is not a "native", but they are definitely "from" here.

Well interestingly enough I identify more with my ethnic heritage more than anything else as I've grown up in an insular environment of that heritage and spent time in my country of heritage every year for several months. I guess after that I come to identify with the parts of North NJ I've grown up in and till this day call home. The country where I was born and spent 1 year of my life, I don't connect with at all.
