Question Is Newark a suburb of New York City? Or is Newark a city with its own identity?

Hey everyone. I currently live in North Texas. However, I have friends who live in and around the New York City metropolitan area. I understand that much of North Jersey, the Hudson River Valley, southwestern Connecticut, and Long Island consist of areas that are considered suburbs of NYC.

Now Newark is the biggest city in New Jersey. It has its own downtown area, financial core, and high-rise skyscrapers.

Is Newark still a suburb of NYC?

Or is Newark a city that has its own individual identity?

Tri-State area residents will sometimes tell outsiders that the Meadowlands Sports Complex is located "in the shadow of NYC". They also say the same for Uniondale on Long Island.

So physically and geographically speaking- Is Newark also situated "in the shadow of NYC"?

Or is Newark the Fort Worth to NYC's Dallas?

newark is not "its own" in the sense that Jersey City and Elizabeth are both significant cities within 10 miles of it. The entire area is densely packed cities/dense suburbs. It all kind of blends together to some degree.

Newark(North Jersey's largest city) is to New York City as Camden(South Jersey's largest city) is to Philadelphia.

Stop saying that. It's ridiculous.

Camden boarders Philly, is much limited in terms of having a central business/recreational core and has a population about 200,000 less than Newark. Comparison to Fort Worth(or to a lesser extent Baltimore) is more accurate.

As far as airports go, Newark is metro New York!

I say it's its own city. It has its own history. And only a few people from places like Kearny say Nerk or Nork. Most people say NEW-erk.

JC is not a borough of NYC OR Newark. Also its own city with its own history. And, uh, in a different state from one of them.
