I am thinking of moving to Montclair. Can someone chime in RE: car commute from Montclair to New Brunswick? I have some flexibility RE: trave times, so I can usually avoid being on the road between 7 and 8:50am (I assume the worst in the AM), and between 4:45 and 6pm (I assume the worst in the PM).

I currently live in Westfield, and driving to New Brunswick is a breeze. I leave home at 9:00ish AM and take the GPS and then the turnpike (I dislike Rt 1), and make no more than 30 mins. Then when headed back home I leave at 6:30ish and usually have a very smooth commute.

What would my commute from Montclair to New Brunswick look like? Especially if I can leave home at 9ish and then head back home at 6:30ish?

Thanks many.

Depending on the exact location in Montclair you would probably be getting on the GSP around exit 148 (Bloomfield Ave.). So that leaves you with about a 40 minute commute to NB with no traffic. There is almost always traffic in the area of the Essex tolls but leaving Montclair at 9am and leaving NB at 6:30pm probably wouldn't be too bad.

To clarify: Chances are I'd be living in downtown Montclair (say, within a 1 mile radio of the movie theatre). Although there's a small chance I could opt for living across the train station in Glenn Ridge. Thanks.

You are probably looking at at least a 45 minute commute without traffic. Having alternate hours certainly would help. Driving in traffic would be well over an hour especially w the Essex toll (as someone mentioned above).

If you're avoiding off peak times, it will be no worse than the drive to/from Westfield - just a longer distance.
