35 mile commute each way.. is that somewhat average?

Looking for homes within 35 miles of Jersey city which include places like bound brook, oakland, and east brunswick.

Being that I've only ever been less than 5 miles from work, I know it would be an adjustment. I also wonder how much gas it would guzzle a week, even though I have a vw GTI that is fuel efficient

If I go west or north Nj then I can avoid most tolls, but I also like towns near the shore.

Also how is traffic in the mornings towards Jersey City? I have to be at work by 7am so hopefully it wouldn't be too congested during that time yet.

my commute is about 45 miles each way, so 90-100 miles a day is what i drive. i use up about 1/4 tank a day. its a sacrifice you make to live in a much better place than where you work.

My wife sometimes goes to training for work in JC (right behind Newport Mall) and she would have to leave no later than 7am to be there at 8am (from Highland Park). You should encounter much less traffic at earlier times.

15 minutes, and it's amazing after spending 5 years doing 1.5 hours+ on mass transit. I know I'm spoiled though and I'd be ok driving up to 45 mins, maybe even an hour if the town and house was right.

Any drive more than 10 miles, which in NJ can easily be a half hour you then become one of the drones.
You have to ask yourself. Do I want to spend more time with my family or do I want to spend time in NJ traffic with the other drones?

My office is 61 miles each way. I work from home 95% of the time which I'm thankful for. Doing that drive every day would take its toll mentally, physically and financially. An average traffic day is about 1 hr 20 minutes (first 35 miles are "with" traffic, last 25 are against). When I do go in I don't leave the office until past 6pm to avoid congestion.

you can't go by mileage, you need to go by time.

35 miles to my previous work location was easy (45-50 min on average). 35 miles to JC I don't think is easy any way you cut it.

If there is any way for you to use trains/PATH to get to your job in Jersey City, do it! Traffic can be brutal unless you are travelling off-peak.

The earliest bus (#68) leaves East Brunswick around 6 AM which would get you to J.C. around 7. The reverse commute back to EB starts around 4PM.
