This makes no sense.

Not only will our school district NOT allow that, but they won't allow you to enroll even after completing K. The child, if in district, can only enter after the cutoff after they complete 1st grade.

If you just need to be within an hour of Wayne and it appears from your research that NY schools have later dates, maybe consider some of the towns close to the NY/NJ border, but on the NY side? I know nothing about the quality of schools there or their cutoff dates, but there are numerous towns in Rockland County (right over the Bergen County border), for instance, that would be less than an hour commute from Wayne.

This is what I was told. My children made the cut off date, so I personally have not experienced this. It should be interesting to see what happens in Nov.

Are you aware that some kids might be 1-1.5yrs older than your child?

There is a girl in our elem school with a Nov. birthday. She did a private Kindergarten and came to our school in 1st grade. She has not done well, and has always been immature compared to the other girls. She is fine academically (probably in the middle) but socially behind.

There was a great article published in one of those Parenting magazines this month...written by the director of Gil St. Bernards school, on the wisdom of being older in the grade.

This isn't about holding back -- your daughter's age IS in line with the group going into Kindergarten. K is one year...why would you let that drive the next 12-16 years of schooling, and where you live?
Be happy she is on the older side -- she'll likely do better academically and socially.

Springfield (in Union County) has a cut off date of Dec 1. It is the only town in NJ that I have found to have such a late cut off date.

There are also other districts like Berkeley Heights, New Providence, East Hanover, Hanover Township that will admit your child to 1st grade (even if her birthday is after Oct 1), if she has completed a private kindergarten program.

It depends from child to child. You can't really do a blanket conclusion.

Not sure what your daughter has to gain from "skipping" ahead, why not let her do kindergarten and be one of the brightest in her class and on the same maturity level emotionally and physically than her peers? If you get your way she's going to be just on par academically but behind physically & emotionally.

No matter how smart she is the maturity will be lacking and in a few years you'll need to prepare her for when all the other girls start going through puberty and she's still "a little girl" may not seem like a big deal but it's enough to bring an 11 year old to tears.

This is a big debate and as was stated above it really depends child by child. There is no perfect solution. Some children actually regress when put in this situation. Kids need to be challenged and sometimes( not saying with all kids but sometimes) being the oldest kid in class can be detrimental to their performance both academically and emotionally. There are tons of studies out there supporting both positions, just google it.

Right. Girls can be mean...do you really know what goes on in schools these days? A more mature girl is much more likely to be socially and emotionally equipped to handle it.

A November birthday puts the child in the best possible position within the class. No judgments about "holding back" like those with summer birthdays, mature for the grade, academically on top. The top private schools actually won't take them younger...so if you ever think you'd want a top private school...know that they won't like it that she is young for the grade.

Also, do you really want to send a 17yo to college?!

Remember, this is a 16-year decision, not a 1-year decision. And there are plenty of Kindergarten enrichment programs if you want more challenge and/or a full schedule next year.

I wish I could find the article. It was actually pretty harsh about the reality of K being the new 1st grade and parents be SURE they are prepared, and she recommended all summer birthdays (June-Sept) be held back. Not for a "competitive edge" but for the reality of today's classrooms with inclusion classes (meaning most attention is on special ed kids or those at risk of not being proficient on standardized tests), crowded classrooms, higher levels of academics, competition, and social skills necessary to do well in school.

The article was in some sort of NJ Parenting magazine and it was written by the Director at Gil St. Bernards school.
