Dunellen was at one time a blue collar working class town. All the of industry in and around Dunellen is gone. What is left is a community of retired old time residents, some working class whites and blacks and the spill over of Hispanics who can't find a place in Plainfield.
There is no night life in Dunellen except for the pool hall and the one go go bar if it is still there. The only restaurant that is still there and it is pretty good is the Dunellen Hotel Ratskeller.
NJ transit operates rail and bus to NYC via rail transfer in Newark.
The schools are mediocre at best.
This comes from a one time Dunellen resident.

Dunellen has very mediocre schools. And if you are looking to commute to NYC regularly then it would be a lengthy commute. It may seem nice but call local PD before you make your decision and get stats on the neighborhood.
Plainfield's crime is on rise, so thats definitely not good.
Also the town is very run down and lots of houses are not well kept.

Depending on what your needs are, there maybe better options in other towns.

All true about Dunellen, not really a "bad" town, just not that many good things either.

If you want to stay in that geographic area, suggest Green Brook or even Middlesex. Maybe South Planifield.

If you want an easier commute to NYC, go east, jumping over the Plainfields, looking in Westfield, Cranford etc area

Schools aren't good. Agreed with boater1's recommendation. If you have kids, I wouldn't recommend living there. If you don't, there are some nice areas (for their price), but you could find nice things over the border into a better town.

There's plenty of restaurants within 15-20 minutes, but not a whole lot beyond Pizza places/take-out in town/right nearby.

Commute to NYC is usually via the Raritan Valley Line station in town, transfer at Newark Penn to NYC. Service is fairly mediocre. Morning/evening rush has frequent trains, but the rest of the time is hourly, so it depends on if your schedule matches the rushes or not.

There's been a big shift towards a hispanic population in the past few years, but I wouldn't be particularly worried about crime on the end of town near Green Brook/Middlesex. The plainfield end is much less nice.
