Ah, grasshoppa, to seek a destination of culture is to by pass all the culture in between. Nj's culture abounds in all her towns and everywhere between.

Belong...? No, there is unrestricted access across city/county/state lines.

Why is it OK for someone an hour from NYC in upstate NY to consider NYC their cultural center, yet wrong for someone in NJ that is the same distance from the city?

It's not wrong. It would just be cooler if we invested in our own cities and had our own culture like most states do.

Even if they had no crime, solid infrastructure, and vibrant economies (which they don't), Newark is too close to NYC, and Trenton and Camden too close to Philly to become cultural centers of their own. Maybe New Brunswick, especially given the presence of Rutgers...

Cool is... being close enough to enjoy NYC and Philly, and all the smaller pockets of culture (and the Shore and wilderness) in between. Frankly I can't think of any states that have more cultural options.

Why are you comparing cities to states? Obviously, cities have more culture than states - they are the main drivers of the media, economy, and everything else. If you do a strict apples-to-apples, state vs. state comparison, NJ has much more of an identity than both PA (where you're either from Philly, Pittsburgh, or nowhere) and NY state (nonexistent in the minds of the vast majority of Americans).

I don't look at it as comparing cities to states. I would prefer that we had a major city on this side of the bridge. From my travels and talking with people that is the biggest knock on Jersey. They say that we have to cross a bridge to get culture, basically i've been told that jersey is new york and phillies b@#4.

I much prefer to be "culturally affiliated" with Philly or NYC. It's much better then the "culture" the state seems to be getting known for. You know the one that is this...

...with a smattering of this...

...and just a sprinkle of this...

So, yeah NYC or Philly, take your pick.
