You have to love this sort of ISH. New Jersey is one of the most educated states in the nation. The outdated notion of the clumsy, blue collar, daughter of a brick mason from Joisey is 35 years old.
If anything; you're a self entitled, obnoxious, princess from from the burbs & the daughter of a Duke graduate.
Not to say that's any better.................. But at least keep current on your wild, sweeping, boring, mind numbing generalizations.

Maybe asbury park because nj is best known for its shoreline and asbury park encompasses a piece of all regions and cultures north and south, u cant call it part of nyc or philly.
Like others, I think it's too very unfortunate that there is not one medium to large city in NJ that is truly desirable to visit. Newark is a hole for the most part, ditto Trenton, Camden is a ghetto, Jersey City is insanely polarized, and Atlantic City is, well Atlantic City. Although in recent times it seems that politicians have been really making a push to revitalize ACY even though it's in South Jersey. There's also the depressed smaller cities that were once great such as Asbury Park, Perth Amboy, Patterson, Plainfield, etc. And then you also have the rinky-dink hip "Jersey" towns that aren't really cities like Hoboken, Red Bank, Morristown, Montclair, Westfield, etc. So you really can't win in Jersey, at least as of right now. Although eventually (30-40 years) that could all change.
And for those who say that BALTIMORE is something to be proud of needs a reality check. Baltimore is a dump with tons of crime and gets lumped in as the bastard child of the DC metro area.
Baltimore has a history of being a major city.. It is a huge port. Before the Federal Government was so HUGE... Baltimore was the bigger and more prestigious city. Baltimore still has its own TV stations, sports teams and it is the cultural center for much of Maryland. Not to mention John Waters movies set in Baltimore( Hairspray, Serial Mom)
If Newark , Jersey City, Trenton or Atlantic City were in most other states many of the suburbs would be part of the city( Cherry Hill would be part of Camden and West Orange would be part of Newark) And be major centers of culture and commerce for the state. However just as Franklin said in colonial times NJ is a barrel tapped at both ends. NYC and Philadelphia are the cultural centers for NJ overshadowing anything in NJ.
However, in most of the country people have definite opinions about NJ and not many states can make that claim. Although it is very NY centric. They think "Sopranos", "Real Housewives" and "Jersey Shore"-- and "jersey shore" is not representative of the real people from the Shore-- but I think that NJ has gone up in most peoples thinking. Other than Texas, i think NJ is the only state with a state identity in the general American mind
