To be clear I can see the point of the meeting. Just not the point of having a Roche official there.
There is no point to the meeting - they know what has to be done, they have to cut and keep only the most essential of services: police and fire. All else should be on the chopping block - those who want to keep it, can pay for it. Most of the town is broke, those with the bling will leave - their not going to pick up the slack.
LOL no , but to build a city within a city , mostly of housing. Work has started along the Meadowlands Parkway from Route 3 down to near the Hospital and along the Tracks from Secaucus JCT West. As the Warehouses shut down , developers buy them and clean them up and build high density housing.... By 2030 all the warehouses should be converted into Housing , the only issue that isn't addressed is what Light Rail lines go through Secaucus. One is to build a loop from Hoboken to Journal SQ to Secaucus JCT along the Meadowlands Parkway to Harmon Meadow then to the North Bergen Transit center where it would loop back down to Hoboken....this loop would service close to 250,000 passengers a day due to Secaucus and Journal SQ developments...it would have 15 stations...
Roche committed to us in 2008,” said Tucci. “They made a commitment for the long term in Nutley. They reorganized. They told us every job was secure. We gave them a tax abatement. Now they are closing.”
Though the numbers are still vague, the closing of this New Jersey branch of Roche is sending shivers down the spines of 1,000 employees and many of Nutley’s 28,900 residents. Losing such a large tax ratable is a worry for all.
As the devastation of this move become clear, there is one thing all parties agreed to during numerous interviews: Roche is part of Nutley’s history.
“We have given this company 80 years,” said Caputo. “As representative of the 28th district I am very upset.”
BY THE NUMBERS Jobs lost: 1,000 Nutley Jobs Lost: 180 Taxes paid to Nutley annually: $9 million Time Line: operations will cease by end of 2013; site plant shut down by 2015 New jobs created: 240 jobs will be created for employees from the Nutley campus, for a new Translational Clinical Research Center. Severance Pay: The minimum severance pay will be 6-months pay. For employees who have been there for 14 years,
There will be more than 180 jobs lost, the fallout from this will be far greater and unfortunately, everyone will have to sacrifice. There are no more "sacred cows", the town homeowners have had enough of "the kick the can down the road approach". Anyone take a look at the 2012 posted town budget? $300,000 just in salary for a shade tree commission - talk about wasting money - you need a commission to watch the trees? Does the state do that for it's state parks? There is plenty of fat that needs to be trimmed.

Newsflash - words don't mean much. That and $5.25 will get you a ride on a NJ Transit bus outta town. "They made a committment" - clearly the town needs some business savvy folks to get things in order. Rule #1 when investing - don't place all your eggs in one basket. Relying on residents for 75%+ of your tax base is bad business. Relying on 1 taxpayer for more than 5% of your overall tax base is bad business. Apparently, the government forgot those rules and decided to make up their own.

The same promise Christie got when he gave the hundreds of millions in tax breaks? MSNBC stiffed Secaucus when they took those breaks, then walked away. Nutley knew for years that Roche was going sooner or later. It is only a shell of what it once was and the lose is split between Clifton and Nutley.Either way they still get taxes on the property.
This closing will devastate the Nutley area.
As each building is knocked down, the Roche tax bill will go down.
This tax money loss to Nutley must be made up in higher taxes or layoffs to the Nutley employees
This is not "just" the loss of 1000 jobs.
It is the loss of 1000 weekly paychecks to the area.
small businesses, lunch places, pizza places, gas stations, supermarkets.
along RT 4, and surrounding area.
businesses may have to close eventually
