This summer my ELECTRIC bills were ridiculous. July 1000K August $964 and TG Sept $498 my house is 2800sq ft we kept it on 76 degrees 90% of the time. We have a pool and kept the filter at 4 hours. We have 2 frig's and 1 freezer. We do laundry almost every day, and just bought an energy efficent W&D.
I called JCPL they said in the STATE OF NJ they are ALLOWED to charge MORE MONEY in the summer months.....AND that rates have increased 20% since last year!!!!!
I don't know about recently but last summer in July (we moved out of state in August) our last electric bill was $600 for the month. It is crazy. BUT we aer still thinking about coming back! LOL
There's nothing to "deal with"- as they said, they're allowed to do it, so unless you can find someone else to buy electricity from (or install a solar or wind system for yourself), you're SOL.
wow! those are some high bills! my highest was about $280 and i thought that was bad. I have JCP&L too - shopping around has been on my to-do list forever, but i have a feeling the savings won't be worth the hassle.
i have a refrig and full size freezer, no pool, and we only put the air on when necessary, not continually and usually kept it at 78 day, 76 night. dryer is gas.
prices have skyrocketed though, i think all around the country.
I think $1000 a month in the summer is just too much money for electrcity.
I think $200/month is too much for electricity is too much, but I'm not about to start a wind turbine farm.
Seriously, for a 2,800 SF house to use that much power with AC set at 76 seems odd. Is this an older house with little/no insulation? Are there large (or multiple) windows with single-pane glazing? Is the HVAC equipment relatively new?
We have a brand new 2,400 SF house in GA, and our power bill for last month was under $200. I know the rates are somewhat different from NJ, but not enough to make it $1,000 there.

Bob is probably on to something there - have you had an energy audit? Might be worth looking into.
