We have to go to Wildwood, NJ next week for my daughter's dance competition. We live in Western Mass so we'll be traveling south. Is there a feasible way to drive down there while avoiding NYC and not adding hours to our trip? A couple extra hours is okay, just not three hours each way or something. Going through upstate NY is okay as we live about 45 minutes from the border. I'm thinking the Mass Pike (90) to the 87 to the 287, but not sure where to go from there or how much extra time that would add in reality. Any advice would be awesome.

Just take either the Tapanzee or Newberg (sp?) bridge off of 280 and link up with GSP I never go through NYC when driving into CT or the few times I have driven to Boston

if you are going from MA to NJ, wouldn't you do 95 South?
95 does not go into the city

What the first two said. I've never gone through the city to go to CT/MA/NH/ME.

As a matter of fact, going through the city would take you longer.

95 is congested and gets backed up. I wouldn't take that chance.

Sure it does. 95 goes right over the GWB.

You are right on the money drive I-90 to the teconic parkway 2 exits down then via chatham to union tpk to hudson then catskill for I-87 all the way to I-287 then GSP DONE. OR GSP FROM I-87 problen GSP gets jammed by the oranges. AVOID I-95 AT ALL COSTS otherwise your better off on metro-north to Grand central then use NJT SUPER EXPRESS 319 wildwood express from port authority this is faster than driving I-95. otherwise use the road directions I gave.

New Jersey Transit click 319 look for trips direct to wildwood it takes 2 hours from nyc. You can amtrak or greyhound to nyc its cheap and takes around 2 hours depending on your city in MA. OR drive to wassiac metronorth in dutchess try to leave and get to the station at AM rush for faster service. just an option if you dont want to add driving hours through upstate or sit through NYC traffic

Avoid that at all costs. It's the worst way down.

Why would someone looking to AVOID NYC take a bus or train FROM NYC. Plus as the trip originates from MA, what good does that do for them.

Going across the Tap and down the GSP routes you around the city area. Shortest route depends where in MA you live. Either 91/Merit or 84/684 to the Tap will work. Taking the Mass Pike all the way to 87 (unless you're right on the western border then 87 would make sense) puts you pretty far out to the west.

Timing your departure can aid in shorting the time involved.

A last resort if the roundabout way is too indirect if they are leaving from springfield. Cause I-91 ain't fast and the tappan zee can get real bad. The train skips traffic and the bus uses a highway that doesnt get hit so hard by traffic.
