assault weapons should still be banned though
there is no need for a regular person to have an AK, AR 15 or any other war combat weapons just to defend his home from a criminal or whatever else

You have to jump through Federal hoops to purchase an assault weapon so very few people own them.

Plus, even the less popular ones (e.g. MACs) are thousands of dollars each. AKs and ARs are several thousand dollars each.

NJ's gun laws must be a real buzzkill for our resident gangbangers.

No one in their "right mind" needs an assault rifle. People have confused freedom with the right to bear arms. This has led to people getting their hands on assault rifles that have no part in our civilized society. I understand that people also get theirs hands on illegal assault rifles as well but for some reason I feel the Govt is not compliant in situations like these in case some horrible situation happens. 99% of regular citizens do not need guns.

65 years living in NJ and never considered needing a gun. After two years in NC with every nut job yahoo having a CC permit I am now considering gun ownership just so I can protect myself from the "good honest law abiding citizens."

Wrong. Part of the reason that gun control is such a touchy issue in this country is the complete lack of understanding of guns, gun laws, etc... You don't have to jump through "federal hoops" to own an assault rifle. You (like many people) are confusing "assault rifle" with "automatic."

This is a NJ legal AR-15:

This is a non-NJ legal AR-15:

The only real difference between the two guns is the size of the magazine. In NJ, no more than a 15 round magazine is allowed, hence the shorter one in the first picture. In the lower picture the gun has a 30 round magazine. NIETHER OF THESE GUNS ARE AUTOMATICS!!! With a 15 round magazine you get 15 shots as fast as you can squeeze the trigger-with a 30 round magazine you get 30 shots as fast as you can pull the trigger. THESE GUNS ARE SEMI-AUTOMATIC!

Under the Federal Firearms Act of 1934, real automatic weapons require a Class III firearms license which comes only from the BATFE, requires a squeaky clean background, a $200 tax stamp for each automatic weapon purchased, and that you live in a state that even allows you to own such weapons. The accurate part of the previous posters comment was that automatic weapons typically cost in the 10s of thousands. This is due to the fact that the manufacture and sale of automatic weapons for civilian use was banned in 1986, so there is a very finite number of automatic weapons available for sale to civilians. The last time I was at the Valley Forge Gun Show there was a pre-ban M-16 selling for a mere $15K-not exactly within reach of the average gang banger. Anyway, back to "assault weapons." Assault weapons are no more dangerous than the average deer rifle because the function the exact same way. They are simply styled to look like military weapons. This is why they are sometimes referred to as "scary black rifles." They do the same thing as the .270 or .30-06 your grandfather used on deer hunting trips to the Adirondacks, they just have Picatinny Rails, maybe a collapsible stock, and, oh yeah, they're black. That's about it.

If 99% of "regular citizens" don't need guns, then why do the police need them? Are hunters not "regular citizens?" What about recreational shooters?

It says nothing of the sort.

A "well regulated militia" was conceived more to be what they have in practice in Switzerland. It does not necessarily give you the right to buy a machine gun and take it to a movie theater.

The Swiss army has long been a militia trained and structured to rapidly respond against foreign aggression. Swiss males grow up expecting to undergo basic military training, usually at age 20 in the Rekrutenschule (German for "recruit school"), the initial boot camp, after which Swiss men remain part of the "militia" in reserve capacity until age 30 (age 34 for officers).

I dont know if I agree with you or not as I could really care less. What I will say is by looking at those guns they should be ILLEGAL in all of our country. Nobody needs them. Sadly our country and its culture is very violent with guns being at the forefront. Then we wonder why we have close to 10k gun related deaths a year. Should we really wonder?

Not that gun nuts care, but the rest of the civilized world thinks we're savages the way we blast each other away 24-7 like we live in a violent Hollywood movie. We're supposed to be better than that.
