I am about to have a deck built. The house does not currently have one. Last year I won an assessment appeal with my town and got a reduction in my taxes. The town is serously considering doing another revaluation, and no matter what happens, I expect my taxes to go up because even if my assessment doesn't change, they will change the tax rate.

Should I put my deck plans on hold? It's not going to be a big or elaborate deck, just about 8 x 16 feet. How much are they likely to clobber me for this as "living space"? It is a 2nd floor deck so will have to have footings in concrete.

Basically the cost of the deck will be your added assessment. It does not matter if you want till after the reval, since you will need to fill for a building permit. Once you do that, the tax assessor gets a copy and puts it onto your improvement value.

you dont need a building permit for hardwood floors.
It will depend on the town and if there is a reval and they come into the house.

most cases, it doesnt change much
