Apparently the previous owners of my house left some really old shotgun shells in the garage. They look like they are from the 1970s and I really do not want them. I called the local PD and they said that they do not accept that kind of stuff...so what should I do with them? I do not think it is safe to just throw the shells away. Maybe bury them in the backyard? Ugh...so annoying the police department wont take them. Any ideas?

Maybe a local range will take them.

Go to a nearby sporting good store that sells hunting gear. They may just take them off your hands.

On the brass end of the shell there will be a number stamped such as 12,20, 16, etc. Post that number, how many you have etc and someone here might make arrangements with you to pick them up.

Put them up on Craigslist and they'll be gone in a day. Plastic hulled shotgun shells stay good for years and years as long as they're kept somewhere reasonably dry.

call the state police
local cops will not touch this stuff

Try to give state cops a idea of age, they can tell you if unstable

have same problem with expired road/boat flares,
no one wants them.
but after a long time they degrade and become dangerous.

Gunpowder doesn't become unstable. I'm using ammo from the 60's and it's fine. The only issue with shotgun shells is the old style paper can expand when damp from humility. Gunpowder is nothing more than nitrocellulose and can be spread in gardens for fertilizer. Older shells use lead pellets while newer ones use steel.

This post is nearly a year old. I would imagine the OP has gotten rid of them by now. FWIW if you called the ATF to dispose of shotgun shells they would probably laugh at you, and the old reply by boater1 is ridiculous.
