Good morning to all,

I am new to the forum, this is my first post. We are relocating from Toronto, Canada to NYC area, were thinking about New Jersey. We would like to be in the area with available train/bus commute to Manhattan and good schools (elementary and secondary). We were thinking about a 3-4 bedroom townhouse/house to buy/rent. Have no idea where to start looking, I will appreciate any suggestions at all (county, city where to start search).

Thank you very much!

A few questions: what is your rough budget? will you be working in Manhattan or just traveling in for fun? are you looking for something more urban or rural? do you enjoy the beach or not particularly?

I am not sure of your budget, but Paramus NJ has buses, and Riveredge is close too, both nice towns....

My recommendation, look for towns that are near NYC and that are within your budget. Have fun!

Thanks a lot for your replies! My husband will be studying in NYC, commute up to in hour probably should be ok. We have kids, so we need good schools, budget about $450-$500K? Not sure yet if we want to buy/rent, it will only be for two years. I guess then if we buy, it should be a decent investment, so that we don't loose money we invest. Does anybody know how much would rent be for a 3-4 bedroom townhouse/house? We were thinking some suburb of new development may be, basically a kid friendly, quite community with access to train/bus to go to NYC.

Thanks again! I appreciate any starting point at all!

I live in Middletown, NJ (eastern Monmouth County)in a townhouse complex 2 miles from NJ Transit trains to NYC. It's a very family-friendly community with excellent schools. There area few townhomes on the market in your price range ($449,000 - $499,000..... including mine) as well as 2 units currently available for rent (I think about $2700 - $2900 per month). They are 3 bedrooms except for mine which is a 4 bedroom. Check out realtor.com and search under zip code 07748 to see listings (or send me a direct message). Good luck.

We live in Maplewood/South Orange area; great community right on the train line. There are plenty of houses in your price range.

Welcome from Toronto! Love your city! If you'd like a nice community with good schools, park, recreation, cultural venues and restaurants try South Orange and Maplewood. The train commute is about a half hour via Midtown direct train. I am a realtor - feel free to ask any questions.

Default NJ Family Town - Commute to NYC

We are looking for many of the same things.....currently our research is focused on Maplewood/South Orange and Cranford/Westfield. You should consider the latter, as they taxes are not as high in Union County, though it may be pricier? I'm not sure - anyone local can chime in and let us know. The communities seem very similar, good schools family oriented, reasonable commute to NYC.

My Husband will be commuting to LES, while I am a FT Mom, for now anyway.
