I'm going to be graduating from college this year and have a job lined up in New York City. I'm going to be starting at $40,000 a year therefore I cannot afford to live anywhere in the 5 burrows. I am looking for a safe area in NJ with plenty of apartments and max price around $800 ($600 would be better) I also need it close to either the PATH train or NJ transit with a max commute around 45 minutes to one hour. Can anyone recommend an area that fits these criteria.

I would suggest maybe starting to look around Roselle Park, Cranford, Garwood and further. Trains and buses to NYC. Also note it's spelled 5 boroughs,,,bro. Burrows are for sumpthin else

You could look at Linden or Rahway. Cheap housing near a NYC train.

$800 is not a lot for rent though. the options will be limited.

Yup!
Very limited
And, apartments in that price range will likely be located in neighborhoods that are..."marginal" at best.

Would you consider finding a roommate? That would give you a lot more options for safe towns with a max budget of $800 per month. A previous poster suggested Cranford, which is a great town, but I'd imagine that it would be very tough, if not impossible, to find an apartment for $800 per month. However, I'm sure you could find a 2 BR for less than $1600.

When I was in college (in NYC), the whole point of moving to NJ was to live without a roommate. If the OP is fine with a roommate, he might as well live in the city?

Not so much, if you want to live in a safe area with a close commute, and spend $600 per month. Just trying to provide some options, not sure why anyone would have an issue with that.
