I finally went to Sonic today (the one in Totowa on Rt. 46). Here is my take on it:
1.) The place was very full, but not that crazy. From entry to exit, it took about 20-25 minutes. That is a pretty bad wait for fast food, but I was considering at least an 1 hour with everything I've heard. However, there was a police van there with a cop standing outside.
2.) The novelty of the restaurant is what, IMO, sets it apart from other fast food joints. The car drive-ins, the car hops, and the "have a supersonic day" slogan all add character to the place.
3.) Now the most important part, the food! Overall, the food wasn't that bad but nothing to write home about. I had a supersonic burger with onion rings and both were OK, but nothing spectacular. I had a banana milkshake and this was very good! It tasted very natural. My mom and I always say that most fast food joints serve fruit shakes that have a "Laffy-Taffy/Now & Later" taste to them but Sonic has good ones.
My brother ordered a bag of popcorn chicken and these were pretty good too. Pretty flavorful. He also had the Chili and cheese tots, which weren't that good.
Overall, will be back for the shakes and other drinks. As for burgers; Five Guys, Fuddruckers, and the Shake Shack (in NYC) will remain my top 3.

The drinks, slushes, and milkshakes are what make Sonic good. The food is OK at best, I really do like their tots though. I lived in Texas for years so I basically grew up on Sonic.

I would not eat at this place. Check out the nutritional value of this crap...

a super sonic cheeseburger almost 1000 calories and 1400mgs of sodium. That is half of what the average person should eat in one day. Definitely not the place to go if you're watching your weight

I only went to try it, its not like I'm going to eat there everyday. If you are at an average weight, you will not get fat if you eat fast food sporadically (at least 1-2 times a month). If a person is overweight or obese, then that's a different story. I'm a healthy eater for the most part; so I think its OK if I treat myself once and a while.

I would add that if you exercise at least 3-4 times a week, about 30-45 minutes a day, most people can get away with eating anything they want.

I passed both Sonic's in northern NJ (Totowa and Hasbrouck Heights) this weekend and it was still mobbed. I went by around midnight and figured it would be less busy, but the police were blocking the parking lots of both - crazy.
Personally, their food has always been okay to me, though their drinks are very good. While I'd like to get a drink there at some point, I am not going to wait a half hour for it!
When I went to the Sonic in Waretown, NJ last July 4th weekend, it was not busy at all. I think much of the craziness right now is simply the novelty of the restaurant. My guess is that by next summer, it'll be much more subdued.
I am guessing Totowa and Hasbrouck Heights aren't thrilled to have to devote a police officer to each restaurant.

i agree. i started counting calories about 10 days ago (down 4 lbs, yippee), but haven't started up with an exercise routine. That's going to be key for long term maintenance.
however, i do think you don't want to be eating this crap all the time, exercise or no exercise. it's amazing to me how much better i feel over these last 10 days eating salads, protein, fruit, and most importantly, no junk.
