I do not feel the government should reimburse anyone for generators under any circumstances. Loans and payment plans are reasonable.

It should be, however you also need to have a financial need. If you are able to afford it on your own, it will not be reimbursed.

It's cheaper to reimburse than it is to cover hospital/skilled nursing facility visits/stays.

its even cheaper if the people buy them themselves. should the government reimburse for airbags in cars also since it reduces injuries/hospital stays? maybe the government should buy all kids helmets for when they ride bicycles. how about people actually take some responsibility for themselves instead of the nanny state covering everything?

as njbest said, loans would be a better option (i think its a better option for pretty much anything that the government currently hands out).

Reimbursement is not going to decrease hospital stays. These people seeking reimbursement already purchased a generator.

You can't honestly tell me that a person who requires electricity to stay alive doesn't already have alternative power. People can't be that careless... can they?

My father needs a nebulizer to stay alive and did have a problem in the hurricane (we are in Monmouth County). He has a nebulizer that operates from a car battery for emergencies, not practical for an 83 yr old who has a breathing problem to be walking to the car in 70 mph winds. They live in a senior community (not active adult- senior) and the walk is a nice distance from his front door. Two days before the storm he spent $300 on a battery operated nebulizer. Guess what - it stopped working. I was on the road at 8:45 PM when the storm was at it's worst, evacuating my parents. He certainly wasn't careless, he did everything right. I will be looking into getting a generator for him.

Sorry to hear about what you had to go through during the storm. I agree, you should look into getting a generator for him. But should it be reimbursed?

My parents do not live high on the hog at all and very well may out live their money. I wouldn't expect reimbursement if they don't qualify financially.
