I cannot believe that America being the most 'advanced', wealthiest, and most powerful nation in the world has still not put power lines underground like Europe, and many other parts of the industrial world.
Power lines should all be underground in every single city/suburban developed part of the state and nation.
Yes, I understand it will cost lots of money, but on the long run it will be worth it, and make the streets and view look much better, nicer, and overall better !!
Being from Germany, I always wondered why America has barely any underground lines. In Germany overground lines were replaced in the 1960's. For many Europeans, American Infrastructure is comparable to a 3rd world country. But it seems like most Americans like it that way. The must like the constant power outages as well. I experienced one power outage in Germany my entire life. Oh well.....
Underground lines weather storms better, but are extremely expensive to install and maintain compared to aerial. I don't see too many retrofits happening. In flood-prone areas underground is a problem too.
Power was lost in East Orange due to the flooded substation; not because utility lines were damaged.
Exactly!
The lines may be below ground, but the substations aren't.
I am glad to get my power back, but already planning on purchasing a propane heater.
The constant bonechilling cold was the worst. I could tolerate everything else.
I was able to use the gas stove to heat up water and food.

Or maybe most major German cities had the chance to rethink their electrical infrastructure during years of rebuilding after the awful 1944-5 obliterations.

Yeah and meanwhile this country rethinks and invests in the infrastructure of Iraq and Afghanistan...
My development in Old Bridge has underground lines and I was without power for 10 days!
