Its no longer surprising how governments can take a bad situation and make it worse.

The entire gas system there has been compromised and it's not safe

Quote:
#njsandy ***SEASIDE HEIGHTS UPDATE -- PLEASE READ CAREFULLY*** Direct from the Borough's website: "UPDATE – 11/3/12 — The latest word from NJ Natural Gas is that the entire gas distribution system on the barrier island has been compromised. They anticipate 6-8 months before Seaside will have gas available. Even though these estimates are preliminary, we wanted you to know now for your long-term planning. We are coordinating with many municipalities and other agencies to allow property owners access to their properties as soon as possible. We are hopeful to have some plan and schedule for allowing people over by the end of next week. In the meanwhile, due to the fact that 80-90% of all properties in Seaside Heights have sustained some type of damage, we suggest you contact FEMA right away. Call (800) 621-3362(FEMA), give your name and property information to receive a claim number. Take care, and we will keep you posted."

After 6 months, any home which has been damaged but not destroyed and neglected since will be a total loss. The temptation by the government at that point will be to condemn the whole thing and hand it over to some developer with a "big idea".

I think they should have been given more than 5 minutes notice to pack. Couldn't they say We'll be back in an hour? What the hell can you pack in 5 minutes? Other than throwing clothes in trash bags, what would you forget? Medication? Identification? Card Cards? I just can't imagine. I would need a good 4 hours to properly pack and even then I would probably forget something. The story says they will be allowed back later with police escort to pack, but wouldn't it make more sense to give them more time now then only have to go back later.

I believe there's some very temping targets for some looting, actually a lot of looting. All you need is a boat, the cover of darkness and some stealth. It's not like you going to trip any burglar alarms or the homeowner is going to surprise you. I doubt the coast guard is going to patrol the bay to prevent people from sneaking on to the island and the police patrols are a joke. There way too many properties for the police to secure them all. Give thieves a few months and they will strip this island clean of jewelry and electronics.

I recall reading that they may be allowed to go back in and get some of their belongings in the near future. However, yeah. They should've been allowed more than 5 minutes to get any important stuff. :/ I would be really frustrated, too, if I was asked to leave a broken home with just a few minutes to spare.

I can just see the suit if there is a gas problem and governaqmtn does stop the danger of people going there. Its a hazard and governamnt must ensure that peopel are protected. that is case law.

The headline does NOT match what is actually being said.

They are saying it is going to take months to repair the gas system, and no timeline was given for the sewers. Nothing in the article actually says they're going to keep people off the island for 8 months.

I would expect they're going to allow people on the island to asess damage/recover posessions/stabilize properties once the gas is fully shut down, but that they will not allow people to stay overnight on the island until the sewers work for obvious reasons. Which will probably be months, but "banned from island", implies something entirely different from not letting them live on the island.

Sadly some people here are too dumb to understand that. Most people do not know the meaning of unsafe.
