Look into following towns:

* Any North Bergen County town
+
* Paramus
* River Edge
* Oradell
* New Milford (OK schools)
* Edgewater

You may want to use www.njmls.com for research, or ask real-estate agent.

or...Allendale. Or any of the towns surrounding Allendale... Since you're looking to rent, Ramsey or Mahwah might be good choices just because they have a lot of rental properties/apartments/condos. But seriously, ALL of the towns in NW Bergen County are going to be "Child-friendly neighborhoods", have good schools, and are of course very safe. Those things define that area.

You don't have to go 40 miles.

Yes, Allendale. A bit far from NYC but reachable in an hour with train in town.

I love the New Milford (OK Schools) comment. What the hell is that supposed to mean? Like if you "cheap out" and live in a town like New Milford your kid will be destined for a mediocre life. Instead of going to a real college, they will end up at a state school. As adults, they will drive a Hyundai instead of a Mercedes. Instead of getting their spices from Williams-Sonoma, they will be forced to shop at Food Basics. We want what is best for our kids, but let me tell you out of state people that the people who live in Northern NJ are OBSESSED with schools and a town like New Milford or Fair Lawn has perfectly fine schools. If you can afford Allendale or Upper Saddle River then fine, but if you can't there is nothing wrong with more working class towns. Just avoid the ghettos (and do not take what most say is ghetto here as doctrine) and you will be fine.

That's why I asked... Allendale is considered Northern Bergen County!

Ridgewood/Paramus is in border between North and South

Your post screams agenda. I don't think you've said anything that helps the OP.

With a $2000-$2500 budget, you can definitely find a nice apartment and possibly a house in Bergen County, without having to be too far from Allendale.

Easy access to NYC can be subjective, depends on how long you want your commute time to be whether driving or taking a bus or train.
