I was at the apt parking lot and I opened to the door a little bit too wide and made contact with the car next to mine. There was a scratch close to where my door would have made contact, but the height does not match up; it's lower. I honestly cannot tell if I made the scratch was somehow made by the motion of my car door opening or if was there already! The part of my car that could have possibly made contact with the car (if the height was matched up) has no scratches. If I did scratch the car, would my car have scratches as well? I don't want to volunteer myself if that's not possible, but if I did indeed scratch the person's car, then I would want to pay them for the damages. What would you do?

thats just part of the risk of owning a car. something minor like that you are better off just moving along.

Unless the scratch went down to the metal I wouldn't worry myself over it. Its one of the perils of parking in a parking lot to begin with. If someone were to really be worried about scratches I would assume they would park WAY away from everyone else. Otherwise its par for the course and you just keep it moving.

thank you for your replies! The scratch looked more like a light scuff mark. I just wish I could be sure if I made the mark or not... I have always left a note when I knew I damaged someone's car (not that I'm careless often!)

You should bang the door at it again just to make sure. If the new mark doesn't match the old mark, then you know it wasn't you and you are free and clear.

I wish there were more people like you. Most people would hit it 2 more times before they even realized they hit it, then they would hit it once more, just to make sure they did damage.
