Getting carpet installed today - $3,700 for the carpet/installation (actually purchased it it from Deena from Jersey Shore's dad who has a carpet store in Freehold - very nice guy). 3 guys just showed up to install it - do I tip them? How much - 10% is almost $400 so is that necessary?

Carpet installers and any construction workers do not rely on tips. If you feel you must give them something go ahead. They will appreciate it but they don't expect it or wait for it.

40 years in construction and never looked for a tip.

10%?!? If you were to tip, I think $20 would be sufficient.

I offer workmen coffee and/or soda and iced tea when they are working in and around my house.
And, when the job is finished, if they have done a good job, I usually give them $20 each.

Tips are a rarity, but well appreciated. $20 each would be plenty.

Exactly... the increased pressure to tip has gotten out of hand to the point that I could understand the OP asking the question.
