Just announced the gunman killed either his mother or father in NJ before going to CT. So tragic. I don't understand why someone kills others and then kills himself. Just kill yourself...do the world a favor.

Just heard on the the news that his parents lived in NJ and he killed one of them this morning before going to the school. They also said he focused on one classroom - that's has to be just about the entire class that he killed with those numbers. But everyone's right - until they get further into the investigation we won't know what really happened. All we know is 26 lives plus a parent in NJ lost their lives in a senseless tragedy.

Edit: Now they're saying he's from Hoboken so you were right. He killed his father in Hoboken and his mother was a teacher at the CT school where he killed everyone.

The gunman's mother worked at the school and he killed her, so basically he killed both parents and a bunch of others. This is so sad, how could someone kill elementary aged kids????? He had to have had no heart!

He had to have a SERIOUS mental condition. It's one thing to kill someone who you perceive has done something to you but to kill a bunch of innocent children defies any logical explanation and anyone capable of doing so should have had red flags raised all over the place.

A whole Kindergarden class. There is absolutely nothing to ever make me understand this behavior.

I pray for the families and all affected.

Innocent children 5 and 6 years old, attacked and murdered

There is no possible to ever make any sense of this

I felt a tear come to my eye in a way that really I havent felt since tears that came on 911. An imagine a young child confused I think sums this up, no one can understand this

So sad

And, when some people call for measures to try to control this type of violence, the automatic response will be...It's too soon after this incident to discuss it.

When will it be appropriate to discuss the question of how we might try to keep deadly weapons out of the hands of deranged people?

its funny, ife seen this statement said today. are we pretending that we arent always having the gun control conversation? sure, people get all up in arms and there is more attention when these things happen, but you know that gun control is always discussed 365 days a year. just because we dont instanly ban guns after an incident of this nature doesnt mean its not an issue every other day.

We need to be able to treat and/or (if necessary) confine mentally ill people we can identify to facilities where they can get the help they need. As for the one's we can't we need to be able to return fire. Some might take that as a crass joke, but it's not that funny when you think about. Mental health issues are sorely neglected in this country, which is part of the problem. Fix that and you'll defuse some of these timebombs before they go off, but you're never going to catch them all. The other part of the problem of course is our inability to defend ourselves against armed attackers in places like New Jersey and Connecticut.

Well, considering 22 children were stabbed in a Chinese classroom today, I would say we might want to direct the conversation more at "How do we get crazy people the help they need and treated sooner?", as opposed to trying (and failing at) limiting the sorts of weapons they can get their hands on.

The reality is, there are 200 million privately held guns in the USA, close to 50% of households. Most believe it's a god-given right to own them, and that's not going to change. You change the laws, and you'll just create a huge black market that will never have any impact on reducing these sorts of things in our lifetime. (Would certainly be a boon for gangs though).

The people who commit these crimes aren't usually people who just had a bad day, snap and pull out a gun and start shooting. They're often people who spend weeks to months methodically planning and preparing. If they have to go buy a gun off a drug dealer in Detroit because guns are outlawed, they're still going to do it.

What we need, is a conversation on mental health treatment, accessibility, and possibly reconsidering our strong push against forced institutionalization/treatment in some cases. Many of these shooters are known dangers to themselves and others. The Aurora guy was, as was the VTech shooter....yet they were still out, free to do whatever.
