The crime in AC is still bad, and there is no way that you would want to live inside of AC. Ever since the late 70's we have been hearing that AC will be built up and become safer....what a bunch of crap.

If you want to go a bit further South from The City, but closer to AC, then maybe you want to look on Point Pleasant Beach. Yes, the Summer traffic is a bit hellish, but it is a nice safe town, an area of shoppes, a really nice beach (on the Ocean, not on an inlet) and very safe.
Sounds like Buffalo...30 years and counting too! They need to tear it down-sad but true. Regarding NYC...I am trying to escape NY, and do not wish to "admire" it from afar. BTW: Just finished looking into Millville and Vineland but both look too rural for me. Will look into the two you suggested. Many thanks! (PS: Good thing I'm not moving tomorrow, as this is very time consuming!)

I know some people with a cottage for sale cheap in Brigantine. The area there is unlike any I have seen along the Jersey coast..if you want to live in NJ and be close to AC this is the spot!
Warning..there are alot ALOT of builders trying to sell condos down there for outrageous $$$$!
Best of luck to you and yours

You truly must be carefull...Good luck

I have pictures of some homes in Brigantine at Home
you have to type it into your top address bar if you want to see them.
This site was set up to help the marine mammal stranding center down there.
The people there are wonderfull! And the Library is so great! You can even get movies from the library! There are some good restaurants in that area too,,The macedonian grill..and the place at the end of the island is a good restaurant too..year round.
If you want a special treat you can go right accross the bridge to the Borgata and get a deeellllicious steak or vegetarian or anything you want !!! There are probably 20 4 star restaurants in the area ..and there is WONDERFULL SHOPPING!!! I dont mean necessarily AC..I mean even better in areas just outside of there.
I was all alone down there in Brigantine and NEVER was afraid..there is a great presence of police and kind people there. It is AC that has issues, and if you just stay away from the bad areas you wont see any of that.
You can get a room in Brigantine yr round at LaSammana and it is a VERY nice place to stay and they will limo you over to the Borgata !! For only 99 a night in some rooms!
Hope this helps..
Oh and one more thing..there is a great burger place on the main drive, Steaks and Shakes with ice cream and deco just like the 50s ..beautiful jukebox too!

Thank you for the leads! I will definitely be checking into them all. Planning on a road trip as soon as the winter weather breaks...Though it hasn't hit these parts, YET!

BTW: What about Delaware...Like near Jersey?

Delaware is very centrally located. The Newark, De area is an hour from Baltimore and Philadelphia. Its 2.5 hours from NYC. The taxes are much lower in DE than they are in NJ.

Default Atlantic city

Hello SWF,
I am 47 year old DWM that lives in Margate NJ (same island ac AC) and I will do my best to give the straight story on the area. Atlantic City is a place you probable would not want to live in. I would suggest Ventor if you are on a budget or Margate or Longport if you can afford it. That is if you want to live on the island. You have alot of nice choices with a veriety of living styles from country to a typical subburb type of town on the main land within 15 minutes of the beach. The Island gets pretty quite in the off season but not dead like other shore towns down here but it is a nice change of pace from the busy summers. The summers are pretty busy but nothing like north or central Jersey. I have had the misfortune of going to Pt. Pleasent and north in the summer or winter and the traffic and attitudes are close to what you find in NYC. It is alot more laid back down here.

As for work and entertainment down here well there is plenty of both with a wide verity The Casinos employ alot of people in all feilds and there are all types of other buisness here including a large health care employment base, car dealers, shops, malls, builders and about everything else you could think of. We have alot of bars and restuarants from dive bars to sushi bars and everything in between and the same with restuarants. The Casinos have alot of shows, concerts and even comedy clubs along with gambling. The beaches are nice and the AC airport is 10 to minutes away and Phila. Intl. Airport is 1 hour away and easy to get to. We see very little snow but it is cold in the winter if you are near the water.

So you are asking what are the down sides well like all of NJ we pay to much in taxes. Home prices on the Islands start around 350K (for a dump) and go way up from there. A decent house on the Island is going to cost you 500 to 600K On the main land within 10 to 15 minutes from the ocean you can buy a 3 bedroom home for 250 to 300K in a decent area.

Well I hope that I was helpfull and if you would like to know more just post it and I will do my best. Good Luck, G

PS: And to set things straight If it where not for the Casinos AC would be on par with Camden. Pretty much it would be a walled in prison that you would not want to get near. The Casinos are doing a good job. Most the areas have been rebuilt with just a few bad areas but it is more a commercial city and not really a residential area.

Margate Guy,

I don't want to redirect or hijack the thread but my wife and I are considering relocating to Atlantic County, specifically the EHT, Northfield, Linwood, etc areas. She and I are both teachers and could afford something reasonable in those areas, we believe. We have one child and want to have 2 more, so the schools are important. As a science teacher I could find work down there I believe, I actually have contacts at AC high school but no others. I know to avoid Pleasantville, both to live and to work in the HS. Could you fill me in on the areas, anything I should know? Also, I know ACHS is rough, but people tell me for an inner city school it's got decent structure and the problems are tempered by the kids coming in from Ventor, Margate and Brigantine. PM me if it's inappropriate for me to ask on this thread, I don't want to hijack the topic. I really welcome comments from anyone on this topic.

Mark in NJ

i grew up in ventnor and margate.i graduated achs when it was on the island(albany ave school) i didn't have any troubles in school. i worked 8 years at acy airport and lived in eht. eht as tripled in the last 6 years and looks to double that in the next 6. three of my inlaws are in the eht school system. they are good schools but crowded and they will be building more.

as for towns, the casinoes have lots of jobs but, lots of poeple trying for them. margate is nice but alittle pricyer(sp?) then ventnor. rents are similar. in winter the place has a good night life mostly on weekends. amhurst ave. or washington ave. have all the bars or you could take the 4 mile drive into acy. ventnor has changed from the one i grew up in due to poeple moving from acy to ventnor.ventnors boardwalk is connected to ac's. the summers are very busy but not like they are in north or central nj(i live now near seaside). ocean city is nice if you have a family and the high school is high on the list as one of the best. ocean city has no bars due to their blue laws. sea isle city is great but dead in the winter as is avalon and stone harbour. gallaway would be like living in ac. bringentine is only accessible from ac. you have to drive though the city to get there, it is like an island prison.(imo).the people are standoff-ish, again IMO. if you need more info let me know. my family that hasn't left work in the casinoes. I grew up there , as did my wife. hope some of this helps

1luvvt, it helps very much. Tell me more about the people being standoffish in Brigantine. Is it like that in Northfield and EHT as well? I got the impression people were much friendlier there than they were in central NJ, am I wrong in that respect?

Also, isn't it too expensive to live in Ocean City? I mean with homeowner's insurance and being so close to the water?
