Hello~
I'm 26 female Asian and my husband is Asian as well.
We arelooking forward to move in to the apartment called AURA APT in East orange.
We loved the apartment but I'm so worried about the safety issue.
We both will be driving and apartment has parking space with gate.(No garage)
We would not be walking the street but I'm worried that sometime when I get home by myself. After i parked the car and walk down to the building and take elevator by myself and staying home alone. If even this is not safe...... Plz let me know!!
My husband works at night so I have to prepare.
I will be going to Hudson County school. My husband Will attend Rutgers. On the weekend we both work at Fort Lee.
Please give me an advise~
I'm new to this city and actually this country.
We really loved the apartment but if it's really crazy idea to move to East orange...let me know......

Reason: need advise
Why East Orange, even if you don't consider safety? You're going to Hudson County Community College in Jersey City? And your husband is going to Rutgers Newark or Rutgers New Brunswick? If it's the Newark campus, you should really be looking further northeast. It will make more sense commute wise (Fort Lee is really up north). For similar budget, Harrison, Kearny have huge Chinese populations and Jersey City Journal Square/Heights has large Indian population both in much more accessible areas for you and much safer.
But safety wise, East Orange is not a good place to go to, esp. if you are new to the country. The northern and western parts closer to West Orange is a little better than the parts by Newark and Irvington, and the police have been cracking down on crime (if you believe the news reports), but East Orange was so scary and ****ty to begin with, not sure how far the police still have to go for the average person to consider moving there. Here is a website that tracks violent crime in the East Orange area. Essex County Scoreboard 2014
While the address is East Orange. It's the South West section of it, so practically in Orange and less than a mile from South Orange.
We recently moved to South Orange, and we end up driving up and down Harrison St. when we go to/from the 280 (generally on weekends). That area doesn't seem dangerous to me. You're a block from Orange Park, which seems nice when we drive past it. There usually seem to be youth soccer matches going on at the South end of the park most weekend days. My wife also loves Boston Market, and it's on Central Ave not far from there.
I have seen some people on the Maplewood/South Orange forums mentioning that the condos along Harrison St. can be a viable option for people that want to stay near South Orange (empty nesters and people without kids) but pay less in taxes.
In the time I've been in there area I've definitely not seen anything untoward happening when I drive through.
I am guessing that you are looking to save some $$ by living there? If you are looking for cheaper city living, the Ironbound might be an option for you. Harrison is getting too expensive.
East Orange isn't the worst place in Nj by far but has a reputation as a ghetto. In the 90s it was highly concentrated with drug dealing, car jackings, shootings and burglaries. However in the last few years it seems the crimes dramatically dropped from the times when it was neck to neck with its neighbors Newark and Irvington.Last summer I worked in that area and minus the area by the Newark border where the projects are the town is starting to look better.New construction, buildings painted, still needs improvement but its getting better at a snails pace.
I personally wouldn't live in east orange or even consider it. I know the crime has dropped a bit recently but you can probably get an apt somewhere a little better for about the same price.
