JGAKATS is on a distinguished road
Default Commute I-280 from Turnpike to Parkway

Does anyone know how long it takes to drive on I-280 west from the Turnpike to the Parkway at around 8-8:30AM.

Is traffic really bad going westbound in the morning?

There is currently a lot of construction activity near the bridge over the Passaic River that has an effect on traffic in that area. How long the delays are in the morning I don't know. Without traffic it probably takes 5 minutes to get from the Tpk to the Pkwy on 280, but I'd give 15 or more during rush, unless anyone else here can give you better info.

Once or twice a week I drive east bound on 280 around 7:00 - 7:30 into Newark. I rarely see traffic coming the other direction.

But there is always a tie up getting onto the GSP southbound in the AM (at the toll booths). Getting onto northbound GSP is usually ok though.
