My wife and I will be moving soon to the north end of Holmdel near Hazlet. I'll be commuting to the Grand Central area and I've read mixed recommendations on commute options. We're only about 5 minutes from the Hazlet train station, but most people tend to recommend the bus. We would be about 15-20 minutes from the bus at PNC. We can afford to take the ferry, but being that it drops you downtown and about a 10 minute walk to the 4/5 train, I'm not sure that's the best solution. If anyone has any recommendations to share, that would be greatly appreciated.
If you are at the north end of Holmdel near Hazlet, would you be driving south then to get to PNC? Why not drive north to cheesequake park and ride and take the academy bus. I'm guessing where you are but probably 8-10 miles away. They have bus after bus that go to port authority. I take the bus from there everyday. Then once in port authority, you can take the S or 7 to grand central. Parking for the bus is free and never an issue with parking spaces and a monthly is $325 (cheaper than the train). When light or limited traffic, the bus ride is 40-50 min.
You forgot to add to add in Gas and time. It would be much easier just to take the train is just around the corner.
If you want to save money the academy bus is the best option. I was going to purchase a house there until the owner back out and we have tried all the transportation options. The train is the best.
I'm surprised to hear that most people recommend bus. But from that location I would definitely say train from Aberdeen/Matawan station. If you catch one of the quicker trains you can be at Penn station in a bit under an hour, if you get one of the more "local" trains it'll be a bit more. The ferry also has a stop at East 35th street? or thereabouts. That's gonna be an hour, And depending on where you're going, the extra walking time may not make it worth it.
Take the bus from Airport Plaza to the Port Authority.
